Ruby registers as 3000 years old because this is set in the future, while she's from the 21st century.

I liked this episode...until Ruby fell unconscious. That's when it lost my attention for a bit. The first half of this episode was definitely the strongest part with The Doctor and Ruby trying not to trigger the landmine. There was good tension in those moments and it was nice to see even more vulnerability with both 15 and Ruby. They even ramped it up a bit when the child and Mundy showed up causing even more stress for The Doctor and Ruby. There was definitely some uniqueness in having The Doctor stay in the same place too. Also had some commentary and aspects with capitalism, blind faith, religion, soldiers, ambulance killing and the whole "Thoughts and prayers" mantra which was pretty decent stuff. We even got the return of the Anglican Marines. They previously appeared in Matt Smith's era in the Weeping Angels two parter story for Series 5 and A Good Man Goes to War from Series 6. Another highlight was definitely Ncuti Gatwa's acting. He was genuinely brilliant in this episode with the way he was expressing fear whilst hiding it under rambling and talking to keep his composure from the mine exploding. He really sold the emotions well here as did Millie as Ruby when she was trying to give the dead body capsule to The Doctor. Definitely some of their best performances at least acting wise. It's interesting how open and emotional this Incarnation of The Doctor is. However, the tension completely disappeared after Ruby was shot. To be honest, I didn't really care for the supporting characters either except for maybe Mundy. She was well acted but even then, I didn't really care for the love story between her and Castro. You could tell they were really cramming them in during the first 5 minutes to establish them fully before the intro but I just didn't care for it here. Plus I don't think Castro's death was necessary for Mundy to get the point. I also thought Splice's reaction to her father's death was very odd and out of place. Like you could argue that she still hasn't processed it and doesn't understand since she's a young kid and I know that people process death differently but I feel like she looked older than intended and had no natural or genuine reaction to her father's death at the end when it was confirmed which I found really weird. Like, I kinda get what they were going for with the dad not being gone as his AI still lives on but it was still weird to me. It's like she had no idea what was going on. And you make a good point about how the mine should have went off when Ruby was tackling Spice down when she ran towards her dad's hologram. I think that's when the tension started going away which is a shame because the first half had decent tension. I also feel like the resolution felt a bit rushed and I was starting to notice the Steven Moffatisms that were springing up during the resolution. Power of love ending? Check. While some of the themes were effective, some of it also felt a bit muddled and Ruby was put out of commission for nearly all the second half meaning she didn't get to do as much. Moffat has a habit of still doing these fake out deaths and while some of the self references were nice, they were a bit too much by the end. But yeah, I feel like the episode could have done with maybe another 10 minutes for a proper wrap up as it felt too instant to me. But I did like the idea of The Doctor getting through the dead father AI with them both having the father connection. Also the old woman showed up again but this time as an ambulance interface! I'm so curious about her now. This was a decent episode but it lost my interest after the first half and didn't quite have the tension or strong momentum with the second half. I like The Doctor and Ruby being alone in the first half but I didn't care for the supporting cast and felt the kid character wasn't natural and the resolution with AI dad saving the day felt rushed. I don't mind having Moffat back to write the occasional episode every now and then, like he did in RTD's first era. I think he was the showrunner for this episode in particular which was nice but I genuinely hope he doesn't become a fulltime showrunner for the show again whenever RTD eventually leaves or steps down again because it just reminded me of how exhausted I got with his writing style. I was starting to groan a bit near the end when I started noticing some familiar Moffatism trends with some of the lines. But yeah. Decent episode. Not my favourite either though. Maybe I'll appreciate this more on a rewatch but I kinda preferred the previous episode(s) tbh.
