Here I am again with some nuggets about the Deaf cultural aspects in this episode! For context, I am a speech & language therapist, which means I work with people with communication differences, and have studied ASL and Deaf culture. So I have SOME knowledge of this subject, but by no means as much as someone within the community. Regarding the semantics, terminology used is very important within the Deaf community. You'll notice that I am capitalizing Deaf here because capital "D" Deaf refers to someone whose deafness is a core aspect of their identity, like Daphne's friend Emmett and his mom (Marlee Matlin). Deaf people are very proud of their identity and view deafness as a culture rather than a disability. Therefore, terms like "hearing impaired" and "hearing loss" which suggest there is something wrong or lesser about them, are not used among Deaf people. These are terms used in the medical community, however, which is why there is often confusion about what words to use. In the Deaf community, Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing are the preferred terms. The phone call with Daphne and Liam was showing the use of Video Relay Services, which is very much a real thing that the government pays for, rather than the caller. Whatever device Daphne was using she had to purchase I'm sure, but there is no charge to use the service. You may have heard of TTY, which is when calls are made through a teletypewriter that transcribes calls into text. This service has been around longer but video calls are more common now for ASL users because they are faster and more efficient. Also you don't need a special device to use it, just a phone with video capacity and internet connection! Lastly, I'll just note that the challenge with the basketball team being deaf comes from the fact that their coach is hearing and does not know how to interact with deaf people. Instead of shouting to get players' attention, you wave your arms. Again, deaf people are more attuned to visual cues so this serves the same function as shouting. Other ways to get a deaf person's attention are to bang on a table or stomp your foot on the floor. To hearing people this may seem impolite as we would not do this to get another hearing person's attention, but it is not considered rude to do with a deaf person. Thanks for reading these lengthy notes! It's a subject I'm passionate about and LOVE that this show gives mainstream attention to. Enjoying your reactions :)
