Temple of the Arcane Flame

The Temple of the Arcane Flame is a hidden resource where a dedicated order mines, refines and uses a rare mineral to fuel their forges with the Arcane Flame, allowing them to apply, modify and remove magical enchantments upon weapons, armor and other items of power.

The Order is governed by the Council of Three, arcane priests who control the flow of the flame and direct the spell-smiths and enchanters toward what items to empower. While many would hope the council fair, unbiased and wise in their rulings, power has not been entirely unable to corrupt one or more of them into utilizing the power of the temple toward their own needs.

I intended the Temple to be a potential location for:

1. A resource location the PC’s can utilize to craft, modify or destroy magical items.

2. A location containing knowledge, services or items the party needs for its current quest.

3. A location that could serve as a place of learning for PC’s wishing to learn spells, improve mastery of enchantment or learn to utilize the Arcane Flamethemselves.

4. A location to support a PC’s backstory or personal mission/quest.

5. A location whose facility is threatened by outside invaders or interior politics that the PC’s may have to defend.

Here is a write-up that corresponds to the included legend:

[1] Temple Door

The entry to the Temple of the Arcane Flame is a simple, unassuming stone door that seems as if it were carved of the mountain face itself. A nondescript border surrounds the archway and no apparent handle or bar exists on the outside. Perceptive characters may notice a faint sigil inscribed into the stone floor before the door that is used by its members to call the door open and closed, or to communicate with those inside.

[2] Temple Grand Entry Hall

This massive grand hall has ceilings over 40 feet in height, supported by massive stone pillars. Its walls are adorned with blue banners bearing a black border and golden sigil of the order – a burning flame within an arcane circle. The center of the chamber holds a raised stone circle, upon which rest a ring of illuminated lamps, as well as a crystalline blue stone platform.

[3] Hallway to the Council Chamber

A long stone hallway stretches westward toward a larger chamber beyond, its walls adorned with large stone statues of winged creatures hovering over burning braziers. A pair of doors lead north and south out of this room, while the grand entry hall doors lay east.

[4] Great Library

A broad library lit by a circular brazier in the center of the room expands in a square chamber framed by bookshelves crammed with tomes, journals and scrolls. Four wooden tables populate the room, where acolytes and instructors teach and research the ways of the Arcane Flame and its many enchantments.

Master Enchanter’s Quarters

South of the library, the Master Enchanter of the temple has quarters containing his private collection of books, scrolls and items he has crafted or gathered.

[5] Acolyte’s Quarters

A modest chamber with six beds provides space for acolytes learning to become spell-smiths, enchanters or other roles related to the Arcane Flame. The room contains other modest furniture and dressers containing uniform clothing, shoes, belts and the like.

[6] Bath & Privy

A communal bath and privy lay off a hallway here.

[7] Private Quarters of a Council Member

This large room contains the private quarters of one of the council members, providing lavish accommodations, private desk, bookshelves, furniture and bed.

[8] Guard Barracks

A large rectangular chamber opens to reveal a guard barracks with room for 12 men and women, furniture, ample storage and a central table at which to gather. Weapon racks line the northern walls, and a few private possessions can be seen laying upon the beds.

[9] High Council Chamber

High ceilings and smooth, carved stone, give way to this expansive chamber. A large raised platform stands to the west, dominated by three crystalline-carved thrones flanked by a pair of winged creature statues hovering over lit braziers. A massive table lay to the south, ringed by several chairs, providing ample space for discussions between the council and their colleagues and guests alike. Several benches line the walls for those waiting to speak with members of the council.

[10] Guest Quarters

Two stone chambers provide accommodations for guests visiting the temple. The rooms are comfortable, well-decorated and meant to keep guests under close watch of the guards and council alike. Few visitors are trusted within the temple.

[11] Council’s Meeting Room

A large rectangular room holds a variety of comfortable meeting locations (tables, couches) and a large map table, currently holding the map of some wilderness location of note. Drawers line the table, filled with scrolls of other maps and locations. The walls are lined with bookshelves, while the northern wall holds the banner of the Arcane Flame.

[12] Private Quarters of Council Members

Two of the council members reside here, within a large private chamber containing a private bath and lavish accommodations. The furnishings are expensive and the room well-maintained. It is likely to also be enchanted and/or warded against scrying, teleportation and other such magics.

[13] Lower Mine Access

This ovoid chamber contains several shadowy passages delving below the temple, into a series of mines owned and operated by the council. Ore carts line sets of tracks that disappear into passages to the north and south, while stone steps exist in the other, allowing one to walk to the lower levels. Stacks of crates, supplies, cart repair stations and other such goods can be found here.

[14] Ore Processing Room

This large room is connected to the Forge of the Arcane Flame, and contains areas for mine carts to be temporarily stored and off-loaded. Tables are filled with ore at various stages of processing as well as tools. The floor is covered in a combination of shattered stone, dust, crystalline shards and other remnants of the process. The ore here is withdrawn from the stone and either collected as crystals or ground into a dust, both of which are used in the process of enchanting items.

[15] Forge of the Arcane Flame

This large stone forge contains bellows on the eastern and western end and several stations positioned along its northern and southern sides. The entire center of the forge is layered in hot coals burning with a brilliant blue flame. The flame is heatless, but conveys a great amount of light and can still be dangerous to expose to raw flesh.

[16] Forge Worker’s Quarters

Quarters of enchanters exist here, where they can rest between sessions working with the Arcane Flame. Many of them wear some form of eye protection, as prolonged exposure to the Arcane Flame can lead to blindness or other conditions.

[17] Master Spell-Smith’s Quarters

In charge of the forge’s operation, this small chamber contains the private quarters of the Master Spell-Smith. While not lavish, privacy is in small supply here in the temple. The room contains a bed, desk and other simple furnishings.

[18] Guard Barracks

Another guard barracks exists here, containing twelve beds, furnishings and a place to gather for those guarding the forge against invaders, as well as unforeseen magical complications – some items of power can have disastrous results, if handled improperly.

[19] Guard Captain Quarters

The captain of the guard resides in this chamber, also serving as their office. The chamber contains bed, furnishings, desk and other modest accommodations.

[20] Grand Dining Hall

This large chamber is used for both everyday meals, as well as formal functions between the council and its temple denizens or visitors. The room boasts many chairs, with a large hearth upon the southern end and a table holding chairs for the three council members.

[21] Kitchen

This large kitchen boasts ample table space, storage and food in preparation for the many meals taken by the acolytes, teachers, spell smiths, enchanters and council members.

[22] Cook’s Quarters

A small bedroom lay south of the kitchen, where the kitchen staff have modest accommodations.
