I think it would be impossible to pull off again. Players today have seen enough Survivor to know that with a merge comes new buffs. But the players of Thailand did not connect 1 and 1 to make 2.

I thought they had a fake merge in Gabon, where they threw the hidden immunity idol into the ocean

Holy guacomole. I think you are right, but I think that is considered a delayed merge. Survivor didn't pull a fast one, but it has been a while since I watched Gabon.
