Even Here, Money is King

Chapter 1

-VB-

When I came to this world as a Contractor of the Waifu Company, I didn’t think that I would be doing … this.

The ship gently bounced on the waves and floated back up. As it cleared the next hill-like waves and momentarily stood at the top of the wave, I saw my destination like a dot on the horizon.

“It’s been three weeks since we saw land?” I asked the captain.

“Yeah, it’s been three weeks,” Captain Emmanuel ground out between his teeth. “Well, it’s time to do your job, boy.”

“Alright, alright,” I said as I got out of the bridge of the ship and pulled out my pokeballs. I didn’t release them until I was on the bridge's roof, though. “Alright, come on out!” I shouted as I threw my four pokeballs into the air.

There were dim flashes of red lights from the four pokeballs as they released their occupants and then flew back to me. I caught them and put them away as my four pokemon took their shape and landed on the bridge.

Emma, a slightly larger-than-average Fearow, cawed at me as it took off and circled the roof of the bridge. She was my first partner and one who helped me get started on this adventure. Or should I say misadventure?

Quickly following my first partner into the air was my much larger Vikavolt, Rammus. The yellow and blue Bug-Electric pokemon always followed around Fearow like a duckling. That might be because when I found Vikavolt as a Grubbin, my Fearow Emma took more gusto to help and raise the little bug than I did. Because of that, Rammus was a cute, cuddly, and cooperative “little” bugger with anything Emma asked, but anyone not Emma - me included - struggled not to get our necks bitten off.

There was a plop by my feet, and I looked down at Mel, an unusually small Togetic, facing the sun and leisurely soaking up the heat while leaning on my leg. I found Togetic as a malnourished Togepi, and her past remained with him to this day with how small she was even as a Togetic, barely hitting a foot and a half in height, unlike her kin’s usual two-foot height.

The last team member screeched at me in what he assumed was a gentle call. I winced and turned around to look at the biggest member of my team, John the Aggron. Standing at seven feet tall, he was as normal as any Aggron could be … if it wasn’t for the scars on his steel and rock body. He was the youngest of my pokemons but also the toughest and wildest of the bunch. He was the one I called upon when deals fell through or particularly rough bounty hunters came after us.

Because of that, he had more than his fair share of scars and I always doted on him for his work and help.

“Yeah, you two can remain on base,” I told them as I sat down. John clunked down on the roof with his nearly eight-hundred-pound weight. I had a feeling that the captain might get pissy with me if he saw the small dent John made on the floor. I sat down along with him and Mel while Emma and Rammus made rounds around the perimeter of the ship in the air as they kept a lookout for trouble.

As I waited for my ship to make port, I pulled out my smartphone and opened up my note app where all of the downloaded information about our destination up ahead was stored in.

Our destination was none other than the Kanto Region … where I had a line of customers waiting to take weapons I purchased from the Kingdoms of Ransei. The Kingdoms of Ransei, of course, didn’t know that I purchased weapons from their less-than-reputable gunsmiths for export purposes. What else were they going to do with the latest war over? They had ramped up production but now those gunsmiths and their factories were without jobs. That’s when I came in and bought guns in bulk at a steal. Those gunsmiths were just happy to offload their inventory.

And while the Kanto-Johto War may have been over for half a decade, neither regions were calm enough to move toward peace just yet. Oh no no. Kantonians were especially aggressive about rearming themselves as best as they could, and their own military industrial complex had yet to catch up to their demands. That’s where the majority of my guns were going to.

Of course, others wanted my guns, too, but weren’t legally allowed to purchase military-grade arms. Normally, this would see me split my stock between the legal market and the black market. This would, of course, lead to the authorities catching on very quickly that I might be doing shady shit.

There were, of course, ways around that. Considering that I’ve been here before, the Kantonian International Police and Officer Jennys knew that I got around it, too. Even though my stock was always to match with what my legal stock should be, black market gun sales seemed to always go up when I visited Kanto!

How mysterious…

My train of thought came to a pause as something caught the corner of my eyes.

I looked up and over the starboard side of the ship, which was toward the east. I squinted my eyes to look at what was speeding toward us… and then frowned as I quickly recognized who was after us.

“Fucking Team Rocket,” I growled. “Team, enemy to the starboard!”

Everyone snapped to attention and turned. In the skies, Emma and Rammus banked hard left as they came around from the port side to hover above me, and John lumbered up while Mel trilled as she flew up on her tiny wings with a bloodthirsty grin.

Team Rocket, on the other hand, came at us on speedboats, accompanied by golbats, fearows, zubats, spearows, tentacools, and a smattering of other pockets.

Pulling out my radio, I called the captain who was right under me in the bridge.

“Captain. I have trash to take care of, over.”

“{Oh, go for it! Don’t let your navigator stop you. No one likes them anyway.}”

Obviously, he saw them coming, too.

“Good.”

Team Rocket’s flyers soared toward us, and I knew exactly who to send into the fray.

“Rammus, paralyze them all! I want all of them to fucking drown in the sea!” I snapped.

My cruel and vicious electric bug screeched before it sped forward like a lightning bolt. He zigzagged across the sky far faster than any of the Team Rocket’s flyers could and flew right into the heart of the flock in seconds of receiving my order.

And then erupted in its signature move.

The speed demon moved about like a whirlwind, clawing through anything it got in his way with a combination of Acrobatics and X-scissors, disrupted everyone around him with Bug Buzz and rapid-fire Air Slash, and struck the dazed birds and bats alike with Electroweb he cast as he flew by.

This was the move that put fear into the flyers of the International Police: Locust Wind.

Because of how fast my vicious little boy was, none of the half-trained flyers could catch him or even stop him when he bodied them like a sumo wrestler. Considering that he was bigger than even their golbats, it probably looked like that before they got cut to pieces.

The rest of us watched as flying pokemons began to fall out of the flock by the dozens every single second that past.

The speedboats were a problem now.

“Nasty Plot build-up, Mel.” Togetic growled as dark energy gathered up around her and she continued to cast them. And at their peak… “Baton pass to John.”

And just like that, my Aggron, who was also charging up a hyper beam as per Nasty Plot build-up plan, received the special attack boost.

“Fire.”

John roared like a Jurassic Park Tyrannosaur Rex, and a world-bleaching white beam erupted out from his mouth.

Before Team Rocket grunts could even realize how fucked they were, the beam struck off-center of their formation and only clipped a boat, but that didn’t matter, because everything erupted from that point like a bomb went off.

A dome of white explosion and light dully roared around us for a few moments before subsiding.

When the world finally quieted down, I noticed how Rammus was already back and flying in circles around Emma who didn’t get to do anything.

My “quiet” Aggron yawned as he sat down after that blast. I couldn’t tell at times if he was quiet or lazy. Even if he needed a recharge after using Hyper Beam, battlers didn’t just plant their asses when everyone else was still alert.

“Good job,” I praised him nonetheless.

He crooned before rolling over onto his stomach. See?

“Alright, let’s eat! I’ll be making curry today!”

That got everyone, especially Rammus, fired up about as much as the battle did, including John, who got up again at the mention of food. Shaking my head as I made my way back down to the kitchen, I hoped that no one in Kanto had noticed but I wasn’t going to sweat it if they didn’t. It was better to talk with a disgruntled customs officer than to let even a single Rocket rat onboard.
