When you say no harm, always remember that mining IS done for aluminum and other components of the panel. While I agree that oil is way way worse; disregard for all the activities involved in making solar panels and batteries is part of why the arguments against solar hold any water at all (water.... get it?... horrible.)

I've actually heard this story twice. I saw the History Channel documentary you mentioned. It was amazing to see the clip of the TV news video from the time. People had to jump to shore for safety! In the end a shallow fresh water lake was turned into a deep saltwater lake populated with deep saltwater fish pulled from the Atlantic. Who could have guessed that humans could make such a huge change to the environment so quickly. Most people would think we couldn't do it if we tried.
