Hey Folks!

We just wanted to touch base with all of you regarding the recent announcement from Patreon regarding subscription billing and Apple.

TL;DR: Patreon has been trying to push a subscription billing model for years. It's seen major pushback from both creators and patrons as it serves neither of us. Apple has given them a convenient (though incredibly BS) excuse to force everyone to switch to subscription billing, and Patreon's current plan is to use the excuse and force everyone onto subscription billing by the end of 2025 at the latest.

So that you know: We have opted out of automatically switching to the subscription billing plan until the maximum amount of time that we are allowed (looks like November 2025?). That means that, with us, you'll still be billed on the first of the month and can continue to plan accordingly.

By the sounds of things, most creators are going to opt for this, as well (like we've said before: Nobody wants this method of billing).

That being said, the only potential downside is that after November (this year) you won't be able to subscribe to our Patreon via the Patreon Apple iOS app. That's okay, though, because you can just use your phone's browser to access Patreon via web browser and subscribe to us in that way. Yeah, it really is that dumb.

Anyway, we just wanted to be 100% transparent with all of you. We hope that the massive amount of backlash that we are both part of will help to show Patreon that they need to not do this. We will keep you all posted!

Thanks for the update. I have actively resisted downloading apps simply because I resented having to download bloatware for things I could already do online. It seems the enshittification of the internet continues. When these changes are forced on everyone, how will a subscription based model differ from how things work now?

Might it be time to move to Subscribestar Adult?

We are considering and are in the process of setting up an account there at the moment. They have to do an approval process and then we have to test it out to make sure it'll do what we need it to do before we're ready to commit one way or the other.

As a patron, you will be charged on the same day in which you subscribed to a creator's page every month. Which means that if you don't coordinate your subscriptions, you could end up having to keep track of when you'll be charged for every creator's page you're subscribed to.

For creators, we won't be able to anticipate monthly income anymore, because it will only trickle in over time instead of in one lump sum on the first of the month. This will make anticipating what we need to do to make up any shortfall impossible to accomplish and we'll have to increase our workload off-patreon just to make sure that we have what we need to survive on every month, whether we actually end up needing it or not.
