This may have been answered over on yt already but the show is based on a series of graphic novels and that’s where the animations come from. They’re basically used to highlight the “heart stopping” moments. For Charlie and Nick it’s leaves and flowers. Other characters and relationships that come up throughout have different symbols. It’s mostly been from Charlie’s side only so far but Nick had a moment when he was teaching Charlie rugby where he looked quite enamoured and the leaves flew around him. Then of course the seagulls at the end when he smiled at Charlie’s text.

Jade Coulthurst

The guy playing Nick (Kit Connor) is in Rocketman. That's where I recognized him from. He plays the teenage elton John. Taron Egerton is the actor who plays adult Elton John in Rocketman.
