Lee becoming president (as clunky and 'meh' as that is), and Saul becoming commander are really just consequences of the times they're in. You've gone on about how 'this wouldn't happen, or that wouldn't happen' in terms of the decisions they make or how things play out, which might be true in the world we live in, but they're all just flawed humans trying to make the best of the situations they're in, in a post-apocalyptic world. None of it is ideal. So even though Saul frakked up (again), Bill still trusts him, and that's the kind of thing that matters more in this world. Things like chain of command, discipline, etc. are luxuries of a functioning military and society. What they have is the illusion of that. Also, strap in and grab another drink, because it's going to get more tense and crazy. :)
