I think the idea behind this episode revolves around parents living in different places. The kid having to switch between both. I never saw it as a rich kid problem myself. I think the authors meant it more as parents living in different places. I have seen many movies revolving around parents being separated, Or one parent living abroad due to their work and possibly other circumstances.

this episode had a slight hint of divorced parents living in different places and the kid doesn't know who he wants to spend his time with, I think that's the angle they were going for here
