The Wonderbolt in this episode, Thunderlane, is another great example of minor characters getting full story arcs in the background of the episodes. He first showed up waaaay back in Season 2, Episode 22: Hurricane Fluttershy. There he was shown as one of the strongest fliers among the team Rainbow Dash assembled to create a tornado. Skip ahead to Season 3, Episode 6: Wonderbolts Academy, and Thunderlane is among the recruits competing to be accepted as a future Wonderbolt, along with Rainbow Dash and Lightning Dust. He also happens to save Rarity's life when he catches her in mid-air after the renegade tornado that Lightning Dust created crashed into the Mane Six's hot air balloon. Now skip ahead to this episode and we see that, while it took him longer to join than Rainbow Dash did, he does finally make it as a full-fledged Wonderbolt. All that for a pony who only briefly showed up in just 11 episodes to date (out of 164 to date).
