General Firefly is named for a pegasus from the original MLP generation that Rainbow Dash's personality is based on (her appearance and name were based on a character that acted more like Rarity). Early fan ideas of RD's mother were often based on Firefly. I liked how this episode fleshed out Rainbow Dash's character a lot. She's runs on instinct most of the time, and her instincts are good, but can let her down in more deliberate actions. It also developed the relationship between Twilight and RD more. Twilight, like many very intelligent people, has a hard time grasping how others might have trouble with what comes naturally to them. The learning goes both ways, since Rainbow Dash naturally falls into the role of Twilight's flying coach (Fluttershy certainly isn't qualified). They both have to learn things from each other that are radically outside their usual wheelhouse. Also, I love Rarity's face when AJ snubs her costumes.
