jet was so traumatized by what happened when he was 8 (watching the fire nation raid his village and kill his parents) that he just saw everyone in the fire nation as a monster. to him fire nation = threat, and in his mind he was genuinely just trying to protect people, long term. its sad that that happens but it does, and i cant help but have sympathy for the guy (his actions were still wrong, dont get it twisted, but dang). when he was talking to the old man, that really solidified for me where he was coming from, he got really emotional like "does the FIRE NATION let people go? does the FIRE NATION show mercy???" it was an unspoken "they had no mercy on my village and im not going to have mercy on them, screw all of them". he just lost his way, he needed therapy or something.
