I remember a lot of people hating this episode when it came out because they were so upset at the idea of twilight having a brother she was so “close to” Yet never mentioned at any point up until this episode. Along with the fact that it introduced a new alicorn princess out of no where, the only other two being Celestia and Luna

Those were indeed Twilight's parents. Her mom is Twilight Velvet, and her father is Night Light. They were shown once before in the flashback episode where Twilight hatched Spike's egg. So far, 3 of the Mane 6's parents have been shown: Twilight's, Pinkie's, and Rarity's. You're not the only one to wonder about what's going on with Celestia. She may have been blind-sided by the fact that the love between Cadance and Shining Armor was so strong that it rivaled Celestia's own power, but she also complimented Twilight on learning a valuable lesson about persevering despite the doubts of others as soon as Chrysalis was defeated. Speaking of Chrysalis, I bet it's going to hurt when she finally lands on solid ground after getting ejected from Canterlot. That said, she wasn't reformed like Nightmare Moon or turned to stone like Discord. Maybe she's learned her lesson about messing with the ponies though. Lyra Heartstrings was one of the bridesmaids, along with Minuette (sometimes called Colgate because of her toothpaste-like mane colors), and Twinkle Shine. It must suck to be brainwashed and then replaced from the wedding. They'll probably get over it though. I saw Derpy in the background at the reception as well. Bit of a funny moment at the end with Princess Luna showing up and asking what she missed. Yeah, while you were sleeping you basically missed the overthrowing of the entire city of Canterlot, princess. No big deal. But hey, she really started jamming to the music at the end, there. Cute to see Spike dancing with Sweetie Belle. Rarity was with Fancy Pants. And Rainbow Dash spent time with Soarin' from the Wonderbolts. I guess Shining Armor is now Prince Shining Armor as he married an alicorn princess. That means Twilight is technically royalty now, if loosely. I'm sure there's plenty I forgot to comment on, but onto the next one!

Ooh I remember that too. The second big 'fandom drama.' In hindsight, they got introduced pretty early in the series, but nobody ever predicted 9 seasons and multiple movies and spinoffs.

"She's a pegasus AND a unicorn". As they said earlier, that's an alicorn. All the princesses are alicorns ^^

No idea why, but your "unacceptable" joke made me laugh way too much. I blame the beer. Also, yeah, the "faking to be useless to teach them" thing is something the fandom has been wondering about a lot. Even more so in later episodes with more characters. Also, they don't feed off the changing / impersonating. They feed off of the love of others.

There's so much to comment on with these two; probably one of the most important episodes of the early show. In the original plan for the episode, Cadance was merely a high ranking unicorn noble. Hasbro marketing demanded a "princess" though, and making her into an alicorn caused a great deal of fandom drama for diverging from Lauren Faust's original vision. This was the last episode Faust was significantly involved with, and a segment of the fandom would continue to insist that everything afterwards "ruined everything forever". I myself believe the high point of the series was seasons 4-6, so judge for yourself. This does mark around the apex of the fandom's popularity, however. Also, this is a good example of the writers taking the careless dictates of the Hasbro executives and turning them into workable stories. This is something they proved to be very good at. Changelings are one of the most significant original creations of the show; they instantly became hits as villains of fan stories and unlikely heroes as well. "Pony finds injured, lost changeling after the Wedding and nurses it back to health" is practically a genre on the main MLP fanfiction website. One of the highest rated stories ever there was about an exiled 'ling, who wanders to Canterlot and accidentally joins the Royal Guard about a decade before the show begins, winding up in boot camp with Shining Armor. Needless to say, hilarity ensues, and the story hasn't even reached the Wedding. The "bug horses" became an integral part of the MLP lore, and Queen Chrysalis (her name was given in the MLP comic issue that came shortly after this episode) had a menacing enough presence here to make her a worthy addition to the ranks of villains. I particularly like the subtle reverb effect she has once unmasked. It really sells the "insect queen" feel. The "This Day Aria" is one of my favorite musical pieces from the show (incidentally, I think Cadance has the best singing voice of the show), and contains an interesting bit of musical trivia. You'll notice the pattern of notes sounds very similar as it alternates between Cadance and Queen Chrysalis. However, the final note in the pattern is somewhat different; with the Queen, it ends with the minor chord for the key rather than the expected "tonic" chord. This is called a "deceptive cadance" and creates an unfinished sound. When the real Cadance sings, we get the expected chord, forming an "authentic cadance" which feels "right" in a way the deceptive one does not. Celestia suffers from what's known as the "Worf Effect". Being ostensibly one of the most powerful beings in the setting, she has to be taken out of the equation somehow so that our main characters can actually resolve the problem and grow. This manifests itself as a tendency for the writers to have her taken down by whatever the villain of the week is. Worf, from Star Trek: TNG also suffered from this kind of plot-mandated handicap. The show doesn't always do a good job of justifying things, but a common fan explanation is that the massive solar energies Celestia can command are not good for delicate work, and her throwing down for real with Chrysalis would slag half of the city as collateral damage. Like Superman, she's TOO powerful, in some respects. There's at least one fanfic I've read that has Celestia giving her version of the famous "World of Cardboard" speech. There's no good reason for Luna to totally sleep through the events though. Speaking of Luna, one of her few phrases here, "I will guard the night" became a kind of motto for her. As a Diarch along side her sister, she splits responsibility for ruling Equestria, she has authority during the night, while Celestia manages the day, as it was long ago. I'm sure there's something I've forgotten that I'd like to comment on, so you may get another post from me. But for now I need to sleep.

its a meme how useless the Princesses are... but actually there is an easy fix to it: stop pretending they are some sort of god. But think of them as some sort of leader. They may be a more powerful as a normal unicorn hence they are alicorns, but still they are just ponies. Compare it to human real world. Our most important/powerful people are still just humans too.

Finally! Somebody who shares my explanation for why Celestia is so hesitating to act, I already stated thinking that I was the only one. Could you please link that fan-fic with the “World of Cardboard” speech? Aside from it, your comment is very good. I would only add, that for me this finale is the point at which the show took a massive turn in it’s feel, with world building and politics taking a mare important role.

AtlasRedux

I have no idea how many times I've heard "This Day Aria". But it's not a few, that's for sure.

whooo boy that ends season 2. Hope you're ready for season 3. Although the shortest out of all of them pretty much planted the seeds for the fandom to rise to it's peak.

All hail our queen Chrysalis all is for the hive the hive is for us all. to answer your question with celestia it's both she is useless and she is teaching a lesson which she revealed at the end. the only ponies worthless beyond her are the royal guard but hey they give the mane 6 more to be great at. this was a great ender but one thing has always bugged me and that was the fact chrysalis invaded to steal all the love to make her kingdom stronger and yet was defeated by love, seriously she got beaten by her food but this is a kids show so yeah gotta let it go. from here on out the show gets more in-tuned to the adult audience and the stories more well story driven. also the season ender will answer some questions you've had

Celestia is powerful but she has limits. She couldn't fight her sister who is just as powerful as her, without the Elements of Harmony, which she could no longer use because her bond with her sister was broken, and had been broken for a thousand years so they needed new users. Discord could only be defeated by the Elements of Harmony, Celestia and Luna defeated him the first time using them. In this episode Queen Chrysalis had been absorbing Shining Armor's love for Cadence for a while, which allowed her to overpower Celestia(later Celestia said the power of their love was undeniable, because it was strong enough to defeat her). Celestia and Luna have been protecting Equestria for thousands of years(Celestia did it herself for the last thousand years) Now they are preparing the next generation of protectors.

The DJ pony is called DJ Pon-3, but the fans call her Vinyl Scratch.

There's a certain YouTube creator who addresses this exact point, but we'll have to wait awhile for that. I'm sure you know who I mean.

So, a really, really dark theory on why Chryssi sent Twilight to the same prison as Cadance, notice how Bug-Horse pushed Twilight into a massive rage, had her trying to take her head off, and then tricked her into revealing the real Cadance, who Twilight promptly attacked..... Chryssi was trying to goad/trick Twilight into killing Cadance.

The comic was the better part of a year after this, we get her name that day from a tweet by one of the writers. Her name had been in the script, but for some reason they never said it on screen.

By far my favorite finale out of all and reasons why include the introduction to IMO the best princess Cadence! Also twilights bad ass brother SA and my favorite villian tied with King Sombra Chrissy!
