Adderbane

This turned out to be one of the defining episodes of the fandom. Luna's social awkwardness and odd habits earned her a lot of sympathy, and many people identified with her struggle to fit in (the shows themes seem to have particularly resonated among teens and young adults with similar social difficulties). Thus she is easily one of the most popular characters outside of the Mane 6. In this episode we also see the bat-ponies pulling Luna's phaeton. Thestrals, as they are sometimes called, immediately seized the fandom's imagination, and interpretations range from simply normal guards under a night-themed illusion, to a subspecies of pegasi, either natural or the descendants of the ponies who sided with Nightmare Moon long ago and were transformed by her dark magic. Them being something like fruit bats, with a craving for mangoes in particular, is a popular idea. I myself particularly liked how they adapted Halloween to Equestria, developing a logical basis for the various customs and traditions, that fit the setting, instead of simply handwaving the holiday. This kind of attention to detail helped the show develop its rich world and has certainly contributed to its success. On the topic of Luna's growth spurt (which you are not imagining), there is no clear answer from the show. There are ways to extrapolate a coherent "Alicorn Lore" from what is given, but I cannot discuss the various interpretations without spoiling things you haven't seen yet, and won't for some time. EDIT: See, Slorg, I can do walls of text too!

Lauren Faust explained why is Luna different in this episode is because when Nightmare Moon was defeated, her evil power was eradicated. Luna was reborn with her magic levels very low. It took time for her "good" power to come back to her, and now she's healed, reformed and rehabilitated and it's indicated by her magic mane.

Adderbane is correct on how the fandom was drawn to Luna, and Patox112 is correct in regard to why Luna is larger now. What is easy to overlook in this episode is the fact that Luna was shut away from society for a thousand years. She is literally a pony out of her time. Customs have changed, the social aspects of society have changed, and her last memories of her subjects were of feeling as if nopony loved her. She's actually a pretty tragic character if you really think about it. This would actually be an excellent time to watch a fan-made video called 'Lullaby for a Princess,' which is an animation of one of the first fan songs from back in the day. It would make a great reaction, but even if you just watch it for yourself I reckon you'd love it. HOWEVER, searching for it on YouTube is bound to show all kinds of spoilers in the Recommended Videos tab, so if you decide you want to watch it, get someone to record it for you.

The Thunderbolts were the fake flight team that Nightmare Moon made up to trick Rainbow Dash in the first 2 episodes of season 1. The Wonderbolts are the real flight team that Rainbow Dash has been trying to get into.

This was the first Episode I ever watched of My Little Pony.

The first time I saw this episode I thought Pinkie Pie was a chicken. Also this episode was written by M. A. Larson, one of the legendary writers of this series(he once appeared on the "Bronies React" series.

I can't say for sure I know there was a reason made by someone in the actual production of the show as to why she was like that and now this but what I do understand was that it revolved around nightmare moon basically draining luna of her powers as she controlled her thus when she was freed she was nothing but a small child but as time went on her powers regained there full abilities. but I can't recall who stated this so don't quote me as i cold be wrong.

Luna is about the same size as Celestia, but a bit smaller since she's her little sister. Alicorns are bigger than normal ponies are, that's why Celestia is so big. Luna was small in Season 1 because she was just defeated and she had low magic levels because she was newly reborn as Luna and changed back to normal.

ALL PRAISE THE ARRIVAL OF THE PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT AND THE START OF THE ROYAL CAPSLOCK VOICE!!! This epsidoe was MASSIVE when it aired. During her season 1 absence (Forced on the staff by execs who thought Luna was to dark to be approipriate for the show) Luna became a fandom darling, with numerous fics and art, and theories on what she was like. None of them were anywhere even close to to what we got, beyond the assumption of her having issues socializing, but the bombastic, dramatic, Royal We using CAPSLOCK LOVING pony we got? Nope, but instantly all those headcanons were forgotten and she was accept in all her glory! It's scientifically proven too, the Brony Psychologists (A group of real psychologist using the brony fandom to study how fandoms grow and develop) as tracked a LOT of data over the years, among non-Mane 6 the answer for 'best pony' has Luna so far above all the rest not even all other ponies combined can beat her. And among the Mane 6 only Twilight beats her. Not only that, but we have Derpy (The grey pegasus in the paper bags who drained the apple tub)! This is the point where the writers knew how much the fans loved her and started deliberately adding scenes of her being her derpy self. Back to Best Princess, keep in mind that what drove her to become NMM in the ffirst place was feeling unloved and rejected by everypony, so..dealing with this was a massive blow for her. But, she won over the ponies hearts, and as made herself forever Best Princess! And Best Pony! Oh, also, this started the Batpony craze, they have never been seen again in canon, and yet are everywhere in fan works. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Oh, also, if you note a lack of Rarity, there was a scene of Luna and Rarity interacting as Rarity tries to get Luna into various costumes but it was cut for time. This is such a sad lack, as nothing but pure joy could come from Tabitha talking to herself. (Tabitha St. Germaine voices both Rarity and Luna you can here her slip into her Rarity voice on Luna's 'fine, be that way!' line.) When asked, Lauren's answer to where Rarity was was she was passed out at home after working like crazy over the last few eeeks making all the costumes. Also, the opening music with Spike walking is a short version of Hall of the Mountain King and the music playing in the background at the festival when it's in full swing is the Munster's theme song.
