Nice episode that explores Twilight's and Spike's relationship a bit closer. We also get introduced to Owlowiscious. A good little helper. Maybe he should stick around. Seems like all the dragons but Spike are rather cranky all the time. Guess the friendship of ponies has rubbed off on Spike and made him a bit different. Season 2 is approaching fast! I'm excited, but my lips are sealed.

To answer your question why some animals do/don't talk: In this universe, most hooved animals (so deers, buffalos, cows, etc) are sentient and most without hooves aren't. This is a general rule so there are a few exceptions.

This one is generally held to be the low point of season 1 (Only show Stoppers being another real contender for that 'honor' though it's not really topping any 'worst' lists overall, mostly being a 'oh right that one exists' type thing.
