Amadeus- Thank you so very much for your marvelous reaction to Amadeus, Jay!! I am so, so happy you loved this movie so much! I love Amadeus very much too! Both Tom Hulce (Mozart) and F. Murray Abraham (Salieri) are absolutely phenomenal throughout this beautiful movie!! Both of them were nominated for Oscars, and sadly only Abraham won. Tom Hulce most definitely deserved to win too. They both absolutely deserved to win! This movie begins with Salieri attempting to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a knife upon him living with and suffering from the overwhelming guilt under his belief that he had killed Mozart. This is why he is taken to the hospital, then moved into the mental hospital, where a priest is soon brought in to hear his confession. Because Salieri kept crying out that he had killed Mozart, even though it's shown in this movie that Mozart died from his own addiction to alcohol and other problems he suffered with himself. What a phenomenal premise and way to begin an epic story such as this. Amadeus isn’t based on Mozart’s true history. But it is based on a number of people’s theories and conspiracies surrounding Mozart, the kind of man he was, and surrounding his death. Many theorized that Salieri killed him, and that Salieri absolutely hated Mozart, because Mozart was known to be a very crude and vulgar man. And he was. However, in truth… Salieri actually respected and admired Mozart, and even liked him. And he had nothing to do with how Mozart died. Although... Salieri tragically suffered from numerous nervous breakdowns late in his life upon hearing the accusations that he might be responsible for poisoning Mozart, which greatly affected him. Mozart was indeed a true musical genius and prodigy. And as such with many, many pure geniuses in their professions, Mozart was driven mad by his own gift. While Salieri just had a beautiful musical talent. Sadly, his music was never famous like he longed for, and his music was never remembered nearly as well as Mozart's. As for Mozart's final work known as his Requiem Mass... You are correct in remembering that his final work was never finished. Mozart sadly died at the young age of thirty-five, before he could complete it. And Salieri wasn't with Mozart in his final days, nor did he ever help Mozart with his transcribing for him. However, Mozart's Requiem Mass was later finished and shared with the masses, and it's come to be known among Mozart's best work. And while this movie shows Mozart being dropped inside a pauper's grave because Mozart had died incredibly poor and in debt, this isn't true either. Mozart did die in debt and incredibly poor. However, he was actually buried inside a common grave, which referred to him being buried in a grave belonging to a citizen not of aristocracy. It was an individual grave, not a communal grave. I absolutely love Amadeus, and this movie most certainly deserved to win all of the awards it won, including an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor (F. Murray Abraham), and Best Director. Thank you very much once again, my dear friend! Sincerely, Heidi
