Hey guys, making a little methylamine today. I did this video on request, so unfortunately I dont have any ideas on what to use it for. Do you guys have any ideas?

Also, I filmed it in 60fps. I think I still prefer 4K video though.

Making Methylamine HCl

In this video, we make some methylamine HCl from formaldehyde and ammonium chloride. Be aware that this might be illegal to do depending on where you live. I decided to try filming some videos in 1080p 60fps. A few other videos will be like this, but I have found that I don't like it.

Would it have made more sense to do the very first washes with MeOH instead of water to limit the amount of ammonium chloride in the next step?

I think MeOH would react with formaldehyde present to make some side products like methyl formate, etc. By washing it with water, we will be getting some extra ammonium chloride, but I dont think it makes a huge difference. Washing it with like 10mL of water would in theory dissovle a maximum of around 3-4g more ammonium chloride.

You could use it to make some methylammonium lead halides ( see <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylammonium_lead_halide" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylammonium_lead_halide</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylammonium_halide" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylammonium_halide</a> ) which have semiconductor properties. Maybe you can try to make a solar cell or a photo detector with it. Also, MeNH2 is used in caffeine synthesis. Also liquid MeNH2 whould have similar properties to NH3, so it would be nice to see if one can also have solvated electrons with it like in a birch reaction.

Here is a man with some good ideas! Methylamine can be made liquid by just dry ice, which is ideal. Maybe I will try that out! For caffeine, I plan to follow a different route and use MeI instead. Also, whoa whoa whoa, that crystal growth on the wiki page was unbelievable...i think i have to look into this
