My former company was really good about taking a day off. The sick days and vacation days were all rolled together in a paid time off (PTO) system. A person could call off work, any day, no questions asked. It didn't matter if they were sick or just playing hooky. The only stipulation was that the call had to be in no less than 30 minutes before the start of their shift, and they had to just not abuse the system by doing that all the time. Last year in March when we had an especially gorgeous warm day after a long cold winter, for the first time ever I called in just to play hooky. Actually, I had a bout of anal glaucoma: I couldn't see my ass going to work.
