You absolutely did do the right thing by saving that bird at the expense of the wall. That little bird mattered; drywall does not. A wall can be fixed, a dead bird can't. You mentioned looking at the morality of such a situation. Morals (moral and immoral) by dictionary definition has to do with what is truly right and truly wrong based on benefit or harm of those affected. In your situation, it was for the benefit of the bird and his/her life to cut the hole and save the bird, while doing nothing for the sake of the wall may have resulted in the death of the bird. Your decision was very moral, and anyone who thinks the wall should have been spared and the bird forgotten about, should be bitch slapped. I can't remember a time when I damaged something for the purpose of saving an animal. It's possible but I really don't know. However, there have been plenty of times when I thought I heard a cat or kitten in distress and went on a wild goose chase looking for a cat, only to realize that I'd been duped by the call of a cat bird once again. But even when I think it's likely to be a bird and not a cat, I'm driven to know for sure, just in case it really is a cat who needs help.
