anytime i watch this i'm just reminded that the woman who voices Lin also does Meg in Disney's Hercules lol

I was told once that in many Japanese films focus on the emotions/feelings of the character and let that move the movie along, while western (or at least American movies) are plot focused and I think this movie really showcases that. Stuff certainly happens and has a storyline but it’s really focused on the growth and emotion which makes the plot rather than the plot making the growth and emotion … if I described that well 🤔 My absolute favorite is Princess Mononoke. One of my favorite movies of all time honestly. Stunning visuals and probably a bit heavier on the ‘plot’ side though still has that Japanese movie feeling to it and very heavy on nature and animals which always increases my interest in something. Lol but my main attachment to it is it’s wonderful depiction of the layers and complicated nature of humans and their choices/way they are

Princess Mononoke was always my favorite too! With Castle in the Sky coming in as a strong second. I always found Spirited Away to be scary as a kid 😅

Len’s voice actress is Meg from Hercules lol and that’s all I can hear 😭

I know you loved the dubbed voice actors, but I'd recommend rewatching in the original Japanese at least once, it does loose something in the translation that you dont get here. Also if you can find it, watch The Kingdom of Dreams & Madness documentary. Its about the studio, how they come up with ideas and how they hand draw the animations. In all Ghibli movies you'll find a lot of Japanese culture and Shinto beliefs (the spirits, statues, gateways ect), all have a big element of humans impact on nature and the environment. Which Spirited Away really has with the stink/river spirit being clogged up with human fly tipping and Haku being a great lake that was filled in and built over, displacing the spirit

You have to watch mononoke princess next ! I love gibli, every movie it’s full of wonders , I must admit it kinda hurt to watch it dubbed 😅 they changed so much, but I also feel like they also explained a lot more, maybe they were afraid it wouldn’t make sense if you don’t know a bit of Japanese folklore, idk, it feels a little like understimating the audience too. Anyway loved watching it with you again 💕 it’s a movie that lets me discover something new every time I watch it again
