I saw this movie in theaters with my best friend, in secret, when I was 17 and deeply in the closet to everyone except my best friend. I also read the book it is based off of (Simon Verses the Homosapien Agenda) before I saw the movie, which was good too of course. But I did I cry very obnoxiously in the theater during the scene between Simon and his mom. I didn't think I would ever get that moment for myself from my own parents. I can't say I got that moment I wanted, but I do have people outside of my blood related family. Like you said, this movie isn't exactly anything extraordinarily new/different, but it was exactly what was needed. Not only did we get the perspective of coming out still being hard no matter what background you come from, but we finally also got a somewhat run-of-the-mill, but GAY, high school romance movie with angst, like straight people have gotten to enjoy for themselves since the beginning of time! This movie leaves my heart bursting with so many emotions every time I've seen it. Thank you so much for the fun and thoughtful reaction, Michael, as always! Can't wait for what's next!

i hated this movie, it really rubbed me the wrong way how he said he's just like us with a normal life - white, middle class happily married parents, like that is reaching af, tried to rewatch but couldnt get past the opening. (happy pride yall. no shame in enjoying this movie its just not for me, also i didnt have to comment anything but idk i just think it's important to point out how tone deaf this movie can be at times)

This was one of the first books I read to comfort me while I was still in the closet. It’s a super scary place knowing you could potentially be in danger for simply being yourself, and having this as a source of knowing that life can get better seriously helped me through those years. you should watch moonlight for pride month. amazing and touching movie. it won an oscar. it’s about growing up as a gay man in the black community. it’s one of my fav movies and while this movie is cute i think there are certain parts that may be unrealistic or just not true to all queer people especially ones who aren’t white. another amazing queer movie is but i’m a cheerleader. way ahead of its time. it’s really camp and satirical and it’s mainly focused on a lesbian relationship which is also different than this movie and this one’s a really fun watch and i’m sure you’d enjoy both of the movies i’ve recommended.

Nick Robinson is incredible. I saw him originally in "A Teacher" a mini drama about a teacher and her student having an "illicit affair". His acting was phenomenal. I felt every emotion he put across. It is worth checking out more of his work!! Loved this movie and it was fun getting to watch it again.

I think you would like Love, Victor too. I'm not sure about its popularity - cause although people enjoyed it in my little social bubble, I don't think it ever got a lot of recognition - but I love the show and I think it touches on important subjects as well.

omg i almost never see anyone talking about “a teacher” !! so good. he was amazing in it and i always associate him with that work first for some reason despite seeing him in other stuff lol.. maybe just cause it left the biggest impact on me.

omg u should do moonlight. it’s another queer film but it touches on growing up as a gay men in a black community. the film won an oscar. one of my favorite films of all time and so touching and amazing. this movies cute and simple but i think moonlight will really hit u differently and since it’s pride month it’s be great to see you do a movie celebrating black queer love since there’s definitely not enough representation out there and moonlight is a film that not only has representation but does an incredible job with it.

I love the movie and it means a lot to me, but I honestly don't think I'll ever get over the fact that they changed the ferris wheel scenes from how it went down in the books. the whole point is that blue was not ready to come out to everyone all at once, so simon asks him to meet up in a private email, not on tumblr for the whole school to see, and yeah, they start dating after that, but they also have the time to talk about it before going fully public on their own terms, and it's still kinda lowkey. but in the movie they just turn it into this whole big spectacle and also blue has to basically come out to everyone in a very public place??? it just feels weird. who actually wants their first kiss to be observed by pretty much everyone they know :|

You should definitely check out Love, Victor, it’s a sort of spinoff from this movie but it’s a tv show and shows other sides of what coming out can be like for some people

Same. I really loved the book, and I was so excited to see the movie. There were a lot of changes, but I still really love the movie! The Ferris wheel scene was definitely my least favorite change, but I guess I understand it from the movie point-of-view where they needed a grand ending, rather than the much more lowkey ending of the book

I really liked this movie! The book was one of my favorites before the movie came out. There are a lot of changes, but they are understandable and still make for a great movie. One difference that I always thought was kinda interesting was like the tone or maybe genre. Reading the book felt like a mystery novel in a way, I was dying to find out who Blue was. He was charismatic and sweet, as a reader you fall for him as Simon did. Then in the movie, it was focused a lot more on Simon’s journey, I feel like we didn’t really see Blue’s personality much. Still great! Just an interesting change they decided to make for the movie.

I remember my sister and I going to the movies to watch this one and being the only ones in there. We had a blast cooing loudly and crying when needed. This is a great book to movie adaptation, I feel the changes they made were perfect for the screen and the performances were so good!

Dudeeeee I havent watched this since i saw it for the first time years ago. I remember being in college and going to a screening on campus, balling my eyes out, then going right back to being in the closet the next day. Coming out can be hard but this movie really helped me on my journey to find pride in my sexuality, even if it took some time. thanks for the trip down memory lane :')

Yes, Nick Robinson is a great actor. He's in a show called "A Teacher" and he's great in that. He's also in "The Maid". I had a huge crush on him for forever because my mom used to watch "Melissa and Joey" and he was in that when he was a teen.
