Yujin's voice is so pretty! And Matthew will literally say the funniest things with the straightest face, probably partly because his Korean isn't as fluent yet, and I just love this so much about him.

As Filipino American, I felt the same way as matthew. I used to go to the Philippines every other summer for 2 months and then coming back, the diaspora was real. I had friends in the states who were Filipino born but haven’t been back in a while vs Filipino Americans who have never visited and I didn’t know where to place myself at times. I loved how you pointed that out about him and I’m excited to what matthew’s journey is since he’s only 21.

About Matthew you can tell he’s not fluent in Korean at all but I feel like saying his Korean is worst than Ricky is a bit of a reach 😭 as a Ricky bias I feel like Matthew is still slightly better, but he totally loose his Korean when he’s nervous haha if you wanna see Jonathan roast other idols, definitely check out the nct dream one lool

i believe jonathan and his family is from congo, however, as another comment stated, they came to korea at a really young age so most of his school life was probably in korea

i’ve noticed that it seems like matthew might feel like he has to over prove himself and his korean identity. I remember during boys planet there was a lot of discourse that surrounded matthew and his identity. initially it was that he was “too korean to be in g group but not korean enough for k group” and then with the whole say my name debacle there were issues with him wanting to prove himself by singing in english. I might read into it way to much because he was my one pick, but i can only imagine how frustrating it is to feel like you don’t fit in anywhere. i also can’t imagine how exhausting it is to be nitpicked constantly when you technically have to work 10x harder than the rest of the group just for basic functions. i feel like as his language skills improve as well as him getting the opportunity to do some soul searching, he’ll be able to loosen up a little. not only is he learning how to be an idol, but in a way he’s also having to learn how to be korean.

Yeah pls watch more KStarNextDoor, it's always a hilarious time! I recommend Skz (they have 2 eps), ATEEZ, Le SSerafim, Enhypen, IVE, G-IDLE and Twice that I remember to be really good ones

I very much think Matthew needing to make a story is actually his great strength as a performer. We saw it in Boys Planet and then in In Bloom, his dancing really shines because of how earnestly he tries to emulate the lyrics - the boy in say my name or the earnest running to his love in In Bloom. I think he always tries to incorporate storytelling in his dancing and even his singing, and that's why he's a real gem and I think bringing back some individuality in dancing that we don't see often in modern kpop dances which are very much catered - I think he'd be amazing in a Pretty U performance, for example. Also, I don't know if that's exactly the same thing, but as a mixed Vietnamese-French girl I've very much experienced a cultural conflict such as Matthew has had in Canada. I look like both and neither ; to Viet people I look white, to French people I look Asian, and I can fit in neither cultures. And that has led me to abandon the idea that I'm "part-something" and "part-something" : in the same way Matthew wants to be thought of as both, we want to only express these different identities as separate but whole parts of ourselves. That's why I think it means a lot to him that he can get this job in Korea too

talking about Mathew reminds me of how in the past Vernon i think also didn't want to be seen as just foreigner and he basically claimed himself as Korean on a variety show but got kind of shut down.

they are so chaotic this was SOOOOOO funny. they all seem so friendly with each other it really does feel like they are family and that's what really drew me into them. and the whole group can sing so well i love them very much

Agreed, I think Matthew does have a bit of a chip on his shoulder, after everything he went through on BP (with Koreans saying he’s too western to be Korean, and a decent portion of the international fanbase having the opinion that him being a Korean in G-Group gave him extra privileges) i think he’s eager to prove people wrong. It also wouldn’t surprise me if he did get bullied, considering (from what we know, thanks to his sister) that he was a gamer and a big anime fan (like a figurine collector level fan …) AND he’s said before he wasn’t popular. I find his willingness to literally say anything so endearing and funny tho. I think the only idol I can remotely think of who’s somewhat similar to him is Kevin Moon from TBZ (which is hilarious since they’re both from Vancouver). They’re both very free thinking and aren’t afraid to say whatever they feel like saying.

I grew up Asian-Canadian in Vancouver(same city that Matthew's from) and I can definitely attest that there is an unspoken social pressure to conform to western behaviours/interests, especially in school settings. I'm also pretty sure he was in the French immersion program we have here, which tends to have a predominantly white demographic, so I wouldn't be surprised if he felt the social pressure even more in that setting. I think Matthew's free way of thinking and behaving is what so many people find endearing because it makes him feel like a real person. I know people like Matthew. I went to school with guys just like him. He doesn't feel like this far away person but instead like someone who I would've passed by in the hallways on the way to class.

as an avid zerose and ricky stan, i disagree on matthews korean being worse than ricky! theyre both trying their best and practicing but ricky is definitely worse than matthew😭matthews korean can be quite poor but worse than ricky is a stretch! ricky often makes errors with spelling and mixes in a lot of english when he speaks + struggles with the language a lot still! meanwhile matthew is definitely more proficient especially considering he grew up speaking the language. theyre both practicing rly hard and improving tho so heh i loooveed yujins voice here so muchh he became part of my top 2 fav voices in zb1! he sings soo welllll

i love how matthew is obsessed with his stories haha and taerae is always the first one to say "why are you so obsessed with them?!". It's adorable to see how on boys planet ep13 they chose each other as the member they're awkward with but now they're both super close.
