Just heard how much I have to pay in taxes for last year. Like $12,000~$15,000?

So here’s the thing, I get the CONCEPT of taxes, you’re all contributing to a whole society’s well being and government.

But what frustrates me is that with ALL the taxes the government collects, why are still people homeless on the streets, teachers underpaid, etc?

Hell, look at our response to the COVID-19 crisis? REALLY? You take an average of $10k+ a month from each tax paying American citizen and America is still this SHIT HOLE? Where is all this money GOING?!

Sorry to get all political but just a frustrating morning I’m having. What do you guys think?

Feel for you PD...it really ticks me off to see policians go into office usually middle class, but in a few short years they are millionaires...wonder where they get that financial boost from....

I’m like... shocked. What is the USA doing with the collected taxes if not funding healthcare, schools, roadwork, etc? No single person that isn’t a millionaire should owe that much in taxes for one year. I can’t even believe it. That’s so wrong

Military-Industrial complex gets a RIDICULOUSLY large percentage of our taxes. It's obscene.

It's because our government has decided that some things are more important than others, such as military over healthcare and etc. It's ridiculous but unfortunately there's only so much we can do other than vote people into office who have better ideas of how to spend that money.

Same thing here in Canada. Basic healthcare and education up to post-secondary is free and taxes for homeowners are relatively fair. I have a fairly decent job with the government and I owe about $1,000 in taxes each year. I can’t imagine living in the US and paying out the arse

I know I don’t understand either it seriously sucks if you’re on the middle of the table you’re screwed you’re not sufficiently poor and neither rich so the majority of the people here that have to work and life day by day struggling and all of this high ranking people just get huge salaries and the rich get discounts on their taxes this’s seriously ridiculously

As someone who has lived outside of the US in different countries for many years, I can confidently say that we Americans a.) have many twisted and messed up systems and b.) we do not live in a shit hole. The US is filled with sophisticated systems of nuance and intricacies that have become over complicated and need a complete rework. Many countries pay more taxes than us and many pay less. The big difference is most other countries have a much more simplified system. Ours is so convoluted that we feel like we’re getting screwed. We probably are ;)

Are you self employed, freelance or like your own corporation? If you are then you could get a lot of that number down when you aren't making profit. When Curt was working contract programming we took an extra thousand out each month. You can also do that when you work somewhere.

The government only aims to benefit themselves. When something is passed they act like it's for our benefit but it's not the case.

I completely understand what you are talking about, in my country you have to pay more than 10% of your net incomes for your retirement, 8 % for health insurance and like other 8 % for being a productive person and earn some money because you are too "rich" compared to homeless people, you have to pay to be able to drive your car on the streets, you have to pay for using the highways, you have to pay import taxes, if you are an entrepreneur you have to pay more taxes and probably i'm forgetting some taxes and most of that money goes directly to the wallet of corrupted politicians

Ngl I am sitting here at 10pm staring drunkly at a budgeting course so I'm not the best person. Everyone I know is happily making off with their refunds every year while I pay in. I studied tax at varsity so I know I'm coming off better because I'm not loaning the government money for free but it doesn't prevent it from sucking. I have to pay for so many private services that the government supposedly provides. Honestly, wtf?

I'm not going defend politicans. Like they earn alot. But at least what I understood in my country (Finland) So they never really have any holidays. So my philosophical thought is, usually (not always) The more money they earn, the less like actually free time and private life they have.

Yikes I'm sorry to hear that. I had no idea American taxes were like that (I'm Canadian) and you don't even get healthcare outta that? I mean, we get taxed more but when you're paying 12-15k USD a year I'd say it's right for you to demand more from your government. My guess is all the money goes to the military...

Yeah it sucks that we can't have nice things here. I had to pay in taxes one year because I'd accidentally claimed tax exemption for part of a year. Now I'm claiming 0 and get a bit of a return, but I don't run my own business so taxes end up being fairly simple for me. I just wish we could get some real social policies passed here, I'd gladly pay more in taxes if it meant everyone got healthcare and our infrastructure was improved -- especially if we could get some high speed rail out here.

I have to pay an extra $600 in taxes because I'm a college student who got a Pell Grant because I couldn't afford college. It seems I have to pay money for being poor.

Dude you have no idea how much I pay in taxes yearly. Between state/federal I lose over 25% of my income to taxes, and feel like I don't get much for it. My property taxes are over 15k a year. I'd be okay paying this much if everything around me was fine, but when my friends still don't have funded healthcare and are in an awful poverty loop and my money is seemingly vanishing into thin air instead of helping them, I get so mad

In Romania almost half of what you make goes into taxes and people are dying in hospitals or leaving the country to find work elsewhere (well not right now)... so yeah... great concept poor execution

It's all about where the taxes are actually allocated. If the US gov't doesn't prioritize projects that actually trickle down to the masses, then it really will be very difficult to see where the taxes go. This doesn't take into account corruption yet, if any.

I do agree with you. Spain is the same but at least we have free sanitary system. I'm always SHOOK when I hear how much people pay in the US for hospital bills.

He is going through some tough times but it does feel really weird to have nothing at all. Release schedule is behind, no news and apparently everything broken. Honestly, it feel like the past few months have not given him a single day without any problems, which is worrying given that people donate for content but I'm just hoping for some clearance and uploads after all this.
