thanks for the reaction pd!

For me, it feels like these lyrics were mostly inspired by what BTS felt in 2017-early 2018. The sudden popularity affected them mentally so much that they were even thinking of disbanding. He's introverted and has social anxiety so I wouldn't be surprised if he still feels this way, especially with the lack of privacy and space. I remember him saying in interviews that he's afraid of falling since they're so high up. I'm sure this was cathartic to him.

i think the lyrics definitely did reflect his feelings and thoughts, but i imagine it was also written during the time when they were suddenly hit with such popularity and felt a lot of pressure. he’s said many times that there is definitely pressure being on top and attracting so many people, so hopefully writing and performing this song gave him a small breath of relief and was sort of therapeutic to do. loved your reaction!

I agree! Yoongi said that he's afraid of falling but not landing.

Shadow reminds me of a poem Suga wrote in an episode of run bts once. In the poem(What a Releif) he says, "...We dreamed about flying high up in the sky, but it's too high and cold here. It's hard to catch our breath. The brighter the light shines on us, the darker the shadow. What a relief we have seven members, what a relief we have each other." From what I've seen, he seems like an introvert. I think this is how he feels. From what I've seen from watching run bts and the festas, Yoongi is a very self reflective person and he is aware of his emotions. I think he finds levity in the other members and the trips they take on Bon Voyage. Songs are defiantly a form of release for him as well.

The lyrics seem to echo genuine thoughts that Suga seemed to have had around late 2017-early 2018, following their initial wide success after DNA and Love Yourself: Her. I think the group as a whole, not just Suga, was really struggling during this time. These concerns have been shown to fans here and there in Run episodes, Festa content, and even award speeches have referred to this time period when the group was unsure of continuing on. During a dinner party for their 2018 Festa, Suga mentioned that after they performed DNA at the 2017 AMAs that he cried in the shower, not because he was happy, but because he was scared of the pressure and felt lost about where they would go from there. RM echoed that the AMA milestone was higher than they ever set out for, so there were feelings of emptiness and that later, as a group they cried on each other's shoulders and discussed their reasons for doing music. During their Artist of the Year speech at 2018 MAMA Hong Kong, Jin talked about how 2018 was a hard year for them to the point that the members discussed whether they should disband or not. He followed up by thanking the members for pulling through that difficult time. From what fans know, during early 2018, after the end of year awards circuit, the boys were pretty inactive for a couple months. During this time they took vacations, and V planned a get away for the members away from staff and cameras. They've alluded to that trip a few times in a way that has led fans to think that it was a healing time for them to overcome whatever fears and concerns their success had brought out. By mid 2018, however, they renewed their contract (a year before their existing was due to expire) which seemed to signify they had overcome the concerns they were dealing with prior to the release of Love Yourself: Tear. I think they all had fears about where they were suppose to do go with their careers after having accomplished much more than they ever thought possible. A lot of their lyrics following this time period discuss how its not necessary to have dreams (goals) in order to be happy, and that you can be happy as long as you are able to find joy in the little things in life. That idea of finding happiness in small every day things seems to be a way they are managing their success. This idea was just recently mentioned again in a Vlive from J-Hope two days ago, where he talked about enjoying the small things in life. I think as a group, BTS usually share their darker thoughts, whether in lyrics or in general, after they've worked through them.

FINALLY!! Thanks PD for reacting to this! I’ve been waiting so long for your reaction to shadow and black swan

Josue Hernandez

I believe this is how he feels, in SUGAs Interlude that he did on Halseys album they talk about the same thing how fame is a double edged sword and they don’t know if they even want it anymore
