Well here is the PSD of the picture to go with the step by step :)

As you can see I'm a bit of a layer fanatic XP ( on some more complex pieces I can easily use the double of that ! )

If you are an aspiring artist there are a couple things here that should be of interest to you . First is how the layers are organized, with almost always in ascending order : The background colorization, the characters color, shading, the lineart, the highlights and lastly the filters. Every artists have their own way to work but personally , after trying a couple of them, I find it the most convenient order for me :3

Filters are a pretty minor things despite all the layers and are mostly here to tweak a bit the picture and give it the finishing touches. Usually, a picture without filters looks still ok

Also notice how I linked layers on top of the prey layer ? This is an extremely useful tool. What it does is making all linked layers affecting only the base layer they have been linked to. In other words you can paint with large strokes without ever worrying to affect what is not this layer :3 it's very handy where you are like me and you don't like very much to work with selections.

I hope this can help you :)

Mhh and now that I'm looking back at it, there is an argument to be made of what the picture looks like without the layer "ambient shading around" ^^
