By the way, the scene where Tripp gets flogged, the charge he got caught on was desertion (going awol).

If you want to see another Great War film, highly recommend The Alamo (1960). John Wayne directed, starred in, and produced this film with his own money. The Production design on the film is absolutely amazing. :)

This movie came out in 89, my history teacher in high school had us watch it in class in 1the fall of 1990 after it came out on VHS. And yes, James Horner doesn't get enough credit for the score in this. The flogging scene as disturbing as it is, was the discipline for desertion. That or shot by firing squad. So he could have chosen to shoot him, but he didn't. And that stuff was always to do be done in front of the troops as an example. Being in charge of this Company must have been difficult for him, because he knows their backgrounds, but he also knows he has a job to do and that's expected and that is to not only teach them how to be soldiers and to be ready for that particular war which was brutal and if they had any chance of seeing battle he wanted them to survive and to do that you have to have your mind, body and soul in a certain place and to do that he had to be even more strict to make them the best of the best in order to just be seen as "equal" in the eyes of the public, Army and politicians. Who already thought they were less than as it was back then. If you read some of his letters you'll find that yes like Morgan Freeman said he wasn't sure if he wanted the responsibility to help lead the company as Sgt Major. Shaw knew exactly what he meant cause he also learned how tough its been being the Colonel for this company. Being in charge or high rank isn't all its cracked up to be. You are responsible for all your men, they're training, their survival. It's a lot and Shaw was only 25 years old when he took command. What were you all doing at 25? Bet it didn't have that much responsibility.. And yes, they didn't want the black company to fight, they did NOT want them to be thought of as "heroes" if they win, they're heroes, if they die they'll still be considered "heroes" for their sacrifice etc. That's why they wanted them to just be used for manual labor and nothing more. Oh and at the last battle Shaw didn't say I'll see you in the 4th Thomas.. He said, I'll see you in the Fort Thomas.. The Fort they're trying to take in this battle. The film budget was 18 million. Glory had multiple noms. And Zwick also directed Legends of the Fall, Courage under Fire, The Siege, The Last Samurai, Love and other drugs, Blood Diamond to name a few.
