I just never understood and still don't why younger people feel that films that are set in certain times within our history is problematic today. No, all that stuff was problematic back then however, that being said, all those racial things etc did happen, its a part of our evolution and we must always respect that evolution and learn from it, so it doesn't ever get repeated. Taking down Confederate statues, and trying to erase our history is so wrong. When we're children we make mistakes, we get disciplined for it (hopefully) and we learn not to repeat those mistakes. If we ignore the mistakes of the past, how are we to continue to learn from them? Sadly, these past 10 years I've felt have been the most problematic than the prior 4 decades that I've lived through. The division in everything is so horrible. There seems to not be a "gray" area that the majority can peacefully live in anymore.. It's this or that and if you're not this, you're that and that makes you evil or vice versa. This world has gone nuts. It's good that you younger folks are watching some of these films that depict our history and maybe not judge it so much as " this film couldn't be made today etc", to "wow I knew the past had problems but we need to see this to learn from it". We should be ashamed of our past but not afraid of our past.

Greg!!Thank you so much for this reaction. It was such a great meditation on radical acceptance and embracing the best parts of ourselves Something pretty lost in our current state of affairs

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Tom Hanks is a treasure that the UNESCO needs to make sure to preserve! This was a such a beautiful movie about friendship, love, lost, courage, determination, with tragedies that makes you feel like something heavy is sitting on your chest, and holesome moments that makes you still belive in humanity. Seeing all this events unfold through the eyes of this blissfully unaware yet SPECIAL person gives you the experience of seeing the world through a cynical pov like most of us would see them, but also the optimistic pov that many of us try to see but are unsuccessful becase like you said "we get in our own way" sometimes, we get in our head and don't think that it can be sometimes just a simple thing like running that can make a difference. And I'm sorry for the people who find this film "problematic", who probably have a very sad look on life and can't get out of their head to see the beauty of this film. Thank you for sharing this with us, I know you put off this because it's not a very "reactable" movie (and that it's very long), but it was nice to share this 2h 16m cinematic classic with you.

I've been a fraud for years, I always thought that I had seen Forrest Gump but it turns out I've only seen the first half. few years ago when I was at school and it was the final week and there's nothing to do, the teachers would put on the movie but there would only be time to watch half then it would be next class. I had only seen or remembered when he went to war, everything else was brand new. Glad you reacted to it because I usually watch any movie you guys watch, and now I'm happy that I've seen the full movie.

I live in Savannah where the bus scenes were shot. The bench was a prop made for the movie, one of four made, and I work at the history museum there that has one of them.

I've seen this movie countless times, but you really got to me, Greg. I haven't teared up over it since I initially saw the movie years ago.

My guess is that it's considered problematic now due to some of the racial terms. However, as offensive as they are, they are real in the context of the scenes, and we shouldn't forget how they were used because the lessons we learn from them in terms of history, become diluted.

And yes, that was a young Haley Joel Osmet.
