Yeah, the character moments are where the show starts to thrive for now. I agree Bart, and the two reapers, were interesting characters. I still think Dean kicking Cas out was pretty out of character, simply on the basis that Dean is a protective parent figure at his core. This is totally a call Jody or Garth moment at minimum. Not a make Cas homeless, just to be saved, just to go back to being homeless. Misha did a fantastic job tapping into Cas's perspectives. As far as I know about the changes in seasons, the first five were mainly headed by Eric Kripke, then six was headed by Sera Gamble, seven by Robert Singer, after which eight to eleven were Jeremy Carver, ending with twelve to fifteen being with Andrew Dabb. In my opinion when the show actually struggled, was when Singer had more pull then some of the others, on the basis of feeling more awkward gender or race related norms/tropes. Kripke and Carver did a very good job of defying these in their time of control.

As stated by another patron, this season and last have the same show runners, and as far as I’ve seen there’s not too much change up in the rest of the writer’s room overall. I think mainly season 8 was done as a sort of back to basics rebuilding, which seems to happen in some way with each new show runner. I think the main thing is that this season is built upon the last ones setups which helps a lot. If nothing else, each season going forward really tries to go places and do new things, though your mileage may vary. I also can’t remember if this momentum continues for this whole season. The 22 episode format tends to wain for me regardless even when the monster of the weeks are good. Though I will say some of the best of those one offs are still yet to come, if you can believe it.

The great thing about Supernatural, at least in my own personal opinion, is that even with seasons that are not necessarily the best ones, they still have really memorable episodes where you either enjoy the action or die from laughter...for example, in season 6 where they played themselves, it was such a great and memorable episode in an otherwise meh season for me. And now that you're in season 9, wait till you get to episode 5, it's my favorite one of the season and something that literally only Supernatural could do! and as other patrons state, your mileage may vary but in the later seasons, there are some really intriguing storylines, season 11 being my personal favourite season out of all of them! I hope you at least get there!

This episode isn't bad necessarily (and has a lot of really enjoyable moments) but I hate so many of the decisions made it drives me crazy. Cas having sex is just played off as a joke but the consent issues are Glaring- he could have just slept with Meg if they wanted to make this happen so bad 😩😩 The same dumb jokes work just as well and they both were into it. And then Dean kicking Cas out is one of my like Top 5 decisions I'll never forgive Dean for no matter how much I love him. Especially when the show makes it SO CLEAR how Cas was suffering on his own in addition to being hunted, throwing him back out without any help is just---ugh

This episode pulls me in different directions. While yes the writing in it was far better than anything from previous seasons, the whole premise of it making it seem like Cas loses his v-card annoys me. Not that Cas having sex annoys me, just the fact that they completely ignore the history of the character where for what -six months?- back in season 7, he was MARRIED??? Like okay let's completely disregard that. Side note: this ep did inspire me a few years ago to write a fanfic for it, so...
