i think the point is that history records the Doctor dying at that time. And that is what happens. The Silence thought they were creating a fixed point in which the Doctor dies - when in fact they were creating a fixed point in which he is merely thought to have died. Also - logically, he must have been in the robot in 5:02pm world - but the robot may have been set to age to maintain the illusion of that being the real Doctor. And given it was the Doctor in the Robot that was on that beach (as dictated by the fixed point in time) it makes sense that it's the Doctor in the robot who trigger s time to move again when he touches River

Greg is right that he was always in the Tesellecta. He knew he had to be seen dying there, but used the time before going to Lake SIlencio to prepare to fool everyone, including Amy, Rory and River, so that he could slip into the shadows. River then doesn't "kill" him while in the Tesselecta, so he tries to rectify that, but in order to convince River to kill him, he has to tell her that he's going to be alright. Obviously he whispers this so that Amy and Rory are still clueless, but they find out via River anyway. I've always just assumed because The Doctor was in the Tesselecta at the beach, that it involved those two and so when they touch time starts again. I actually don't know if just The Doctor touching River would have worked. Honestly not sure why River killed him on the beach the first time, but not the second... never thought about that. I suppose Moffat was writing it as he was going before planning it all out and the sequence of events becomes a little bit messy, or it's just to be assumed that in this one timeline she doesn't and that's what we're following for this particular story. This would also suggest that only this timeline Amy remembers both events, when original series 6 Amy doesn't. Hope that clears things up!

In the Tennant episode River said that the last time she'd seen the Doctor, he turned up on her door step with a haircut and a new suit, He took her to the Singing Towers of Darillium - the towers sang, and he cried , And yes, in the Library River knows the Doctor's name - so at some point in their relationship he clearly does tell her - but not at the wedding :P

Such a fun episode, and with its usual River +2 uplift. TBH I don't examine the logic all that closely. It probably works (more or less), and I waive the details in the interests of the storytelling and great characters!

Well done on Greg for remembering the circumstances of the Doctor and Rivers final date fairly well. Down to their date being at some kind of tower, and the Doctor crying because he knows it’s their last night with one another, good job.

Remember how you said "I'm not going to think about it too much"... Yeah, best do that😆.. Great episode though!

All valid questions! This is the problem some people have with some of the Moffat stories and arcs, in that they are indeed too convoluted. Yet could be said to be incredibly entertaining also. The balance I perfer if I had to choose. But I too reflect on the myriad of questions still, even after countless rewatches. I guess there are two versions of events where The Doctor is both himself and in the Teselecta. At some point he becomes aware of the events and seeks to change it. Wibbley wobbly timey whimey. Let's also not forget that Amy is a flesh avatar the first half of this series. Said to have been likely abducted before America. What with physically being some place else, who the heck knows how that would hypothetically affect her ever changing memories. It was established in Lets Kill Hitler that the teselectas change form and are heard to be made of a material not like an actual person. Established by the clanking sound it made when it was putting on the soliders glasses. A detail that was helpful sound production at the time, but now seems to be possibly contradictory. Simply hugging or just touching The Doctor would likely be a pretty big give away that he wasn't what he appears to be. I'm not able to say precisely when he was and wasn't inside the teselecta. But we know when he definitely was and it's clear that they should have been able to tell if previously established traits are to be taken as current and that it isn't a more advanced model he is in. It's messy but its fun, is where I land on the subject of does it all make sense. In an ever changing universe where a crazy alien in a box of contrary dimensions. Who has been known to lick, sniff and taste their way all through time and space. Whilst on some pretty nuts adventures. Most of the time I've decided to just except most of it, if it's entertaining.

2021-11-30 21:16:53 A very well crafted analysis of the finale. One question though, did you like the episode? I think you did because of all the post discussion, so if this is the case, glad you liked it! I do too, even as convoluted as it is. Plus it meant Amy & Rory (plus River) are coming back for series 7, hooray! Take care guys.

There is no first and second time. The Doctor's "death" was always the same: the Tesselecta is shot and burned, and River pretends she doesn't know what really happened. The only time it was different was River trying to break a fixed point.
