I found it a little odd/annoying that Dean spent (at least) the first 5 episodes of this season giving Sam so much crap for quitting the hunting life to the point where Sam gave him an ultimatum to either knock it off or he'd ditch Dean's ass and now all of a sudden it's "Oh, Sammy, my whole life is about giving you that safe, normal life you always wanted." Suuuuuper hypocritical. Dean just loves riding around on that high horse while also playing the victim. "Oh, poor me, I'm forced to martyr myself for my little brother." Actually Dean, multiple times now you've forced your brother back INTO the life, all because you couldn't stand to do it alone and you thought that the only thing that gives Sam's life meaning is hunting and if he's not hunting then he's a traitor and a disappointment. That's my perspective anyway 🤷‍♀️

So the little sister's deal was to not be fat anymore?

RNR

Tom made a deal to get his wife, the hot rancher lady made a deal to cure her mother's Parkinsons, and Margie made a deal to strike oil. Tom's wife even said "Margie always thought we'd be happy if we were rich" and clearly one of them had to make a deal for the oil because there wasn't oil there before

I agree with John! He might not have said anything different from Greg, but I definitely agree with him more on general principles! 😂 Dean nesting is just the cutest thing. He hasn’t had his own place since he was 4 (well, perhaps that year with Lisa), and you can see how much he adores it. Sam seem to see it more as useful. Only one thing bugs me about this episode, which is that there seems to be no one else working at the place until Sam and Dean arrive, and they are immediately drafted in to cook and serve dinner. How could the lovely Latina (sorry, can’t remember her name off the top of my head) be handling the whole place by herself? Surely it takes a lot of hands to run a big place like that. And it’s a shame that Dean doesn’t get some serious alone time with her! Good point, actually. Dean will have seen a hell hound before when he was dragged to Hell at the end of season 3, although his emotional state would have been entirely different! Audience has never seen one, though. We’ve only seen through the hell hound’s eyes or blood spurting from invisible dogs. I think you’ve got a certain subsection of the fandom here on your Patreon. We are perhaps closer in opinions than some areas of gibbering insanity you might find elsewhere, but there’s certainly a lot we don’t agree with each other about. But I think you’ve seen we’re not slavish adorers of the programme either. There are episodes that we recognise as sub par (and then again, others we like that you don’t!). If we knew exactly how you were going to react, you would not be worth watching. If you diss an episode I really like, I might grump, but I’ll be back the next week!

I liked this episode so rest easy greg. The jump scare got me as well. What i noticed that most reactors do not comment on is dean placing his mom picture in his new room. Greg you mentioned goals and i think this episode cleared up the brothers goals. Sam is in this hunter life temporarily (no need to set up a room for himself like dean) he wants to defeat all the demons and live a normal life. He has never had a real reason to be a hunter. (Until they killed jessica) He is doing these trials so he can stop hunting and put it all behind him. Dean lost his mother. That is why he and john became hunters. Unlike Sam, dean remembered her. Dean spent most of his life hunting for that reason. He has nothing else. He used to be sam protector too but last year he realized sam did not need him too. So no goals outside of being a hunter. That is scary for him. So his goal became giving sam that opportunity to live a normal life even at the cost of his life but that fell through now too. But now he is back to watching out for sam as he does these trials.

I'm definitely one of those fans who loves the show so much that I'll happily criticize it if it's not performing as well as I know it can. This episode is alright. Kind of likeable. I liked the beginning part with the in the Bunker the most. I think there's a level of trepidation I have while seeing this episode because it's talking about three trials that need to be done. That sort of thing usually doesn't bode well, and knowing this show, there's going to be some crap ahead. I think the talk between the brothers was well overdue, but it bothers me too. I don't like where Dean's head's at. It makes my heart hurt for him. Answer to your hell hound question - no. We've never actually seen a hell hound yet. We've only seen results of them moving around. Killing people, crashing through windows, etc.

I love this episode, and I love the trials story line, one of my favourites of the series! This really shows the heart of the show, the brothers and how they feel about one another, you don't often hear them talk about that, the winchesters are not known to express their feelings so openly, so when they do, it lets us see a glimpse into their life, and reminds us that they have had only each other to really constantly care and think about. Also this season is when Jared Padalecki had his mental health issues come to light, and had his almost suicide scare. I always think about that while I re watch this season. So happy you liked it too!!

Really like this one! Its heartbreaking Dean insisting he's bound for death and that it's more important to keep Sam safe, but it shows Sam why he has to be the one to go through the trials. At the root of it all Dean doesn't believe he can have a "good life," but he's seen Sam have the ability to leave the hunting life a couple times until this point. On the other hand, in the beginning of the episode Sam sees Dean enjoying the little things about having a home and it subtly implies that Dean isn't as hopeless as he believes himself to be. It really works well with their characters and sets up interesting conflict while Sam attempts the trials. Excited for y'all to see the rest of the season!

Great reaction, This is definitely a top tier episode of this season

Vel

"gibbering insanity" ... I'm dying right now. BAHAHAHAHAHA.

Vel

Yep. So often people project this sense of hopelessness onto Dean, and it can get misinterpreted to the point of ridiculousness. I mean, yes...it's there, but not nearly at the level that people make it out to be. Once you hit a certain age you just understand who you are...you grow into it and finally accept it. For Dean, he's married to the job. Unfortunately, that job doesn't have a retirement package or the statistical evidence of a long life. Acknowledging that isn't a bad thing...it's honest. And the truth is always brutal. I have always interpreted it that way first, even though at times he can become a little too reckless. But that's how all heroes and protectors are. And when I can't quite understand where the characters are coming from, I usually listen to Jensen's own words.

Diana

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes of this season! If I had to get a bit nit picky, Sam's line in the beginning about Dean not knowing what a kitchen was felt really odd, considering by this point the show has basically established that Dean had to raise Sam in their childhood, which would include providing food. But I absolutely adore Sam's speech of insisting to do the trials, because he is tired of the both of them feeling trapped in a suicidal way in the hunting life. I also really like that Dean doesn't hook up with the ranch hand under those particular circumstances. It just would have felt awkward like one of them were taking advantage of the other in the situation. The glasses are actually a new visual concept. In the previous seasons all the show did was move/break a bunch of furniture to allude to a hell hound being in the room. Both great tools to get the job done.

Mary Coelho

Fair enough! I might just have a different viewpoint of it though, and maybe even a different one than Jensen himself. I personally see the 'hopelessness' he feels about himself as another layer to that exact mindset you're describing- not something separate. That comes from my personal perspective combined with how I interpret the show and Jensen's performance. I think that's valid, but its okay that you disagree!

Vel

I agree with you, though... It's there, and it's feeding into all the other aspects but it's not the driving force. No matter what some will say, I don't believe he wants to die. He's definitely not afraid to, though. And I really liked your take on Sam's perspective too.

Mary Coelho

I don't think he necessarily he wants to die either. I was saying he doesn't see hope for a happier life the way Sam does.

Steve Rivera

This is a very enjoyable episode so don't worry too much Greg lol A lot of people already listed out great points about this episode so I'm not gonna repeat all that. You guys basically hit on most of it too. One of the more exciting things for me in this episode is FINALLY getting to see a Hellhound, which I'm pretty sure is the first non-humanoid monster to be seen in the show. As much as I love Supernatural, and it is my favorite show, I freely admit by this point that I was tired of every creature being humanoid. Every time something sounded non-humanoid, I was disappointed to see it was a person in costume after all. Season 6 was the beginning of that irritation. Creatures were escaping from Purgatory, and it had gotten me excited for actual monsters. But nope, dragons, the spider monster from that soulless Sam episode, Leviathan, all still looked human. An then they got me AGAIN. The season 7 finale cliffhanger was amazing, and you see shadows and eyes of very unhuman like things as Dean looks around Purgatory. Alas, we only got to see vamps and Leviathan in Purgatory. Huge let down. So in season 8 to finally see a fully realized CGI monster that isn't human was a highlight for me personally, and a welcome sign of possible things to come. In a show about monsters, I felt it was quite overdue. I think they definitely could've swinged non-humanoid monsters even without CGI, but they just seemed hellbent on making EVERYTHING human-like. Those dragons man lol This is one of the best episodes of the season, it's a shame that it's followed by...a ruff one...
