Simply Faded

I've enjoy this episode more as years have past.

One thing that's weird about the play. I know it would be Fire Nation propaganda, but they still portrayed Team Avatar as the heroes until the end. They were the protagonists of the play. It wasn't from the perspective of the Fire Lord. He only showed up in the final scene, and was clearly set up as the big bad, but then he just wins and the protagonists die. It's weird writing (the play, not the episode).

The stuff they say after leaving the play, about how it sucked, but "the effects were decent" is basically a parody of how the ATLA creators felt about the live action movie.

Best meta/recap episode ever!

The reason Aang was played by a woman was a double reference. One, it is a reference to Peter Pan, where the lead is a young boy but always played by an adult woman. Second, Nickelodeon wanted an adult woman to voice Aang in the show instead of a little boy in case his voiced dropped. This is pretty common in the industry (Debi Derryberry as Jimmy Neutron, Tara Strong as Timmy Turner, etc).

Effects referring to the real theatre techniques such as the props used in plays and how they lift people up or disappear under the floor.

For the a bit of context, the first two seasons of the show aired in direct subsequent years. However, for the third season they had to take some extra time to put things together, due to Mako's passing. So this recap episode was very helpful at the time. When I first originally watched it I was caught up in the cannon story of how could this even happen? But when I rewatched it I could understand and respect the meta commentary much more.
