I don't see how Amelia having sex with Sam, a man she's in love with and was dependent on for a year, is so much worse than her husband- who pledged his life to be with her forever- going behind her back to enlist in the military. 2 wrongs don't make a right, blah blah, but I'm just saying that hubby abandoned and betrayed her first and is the reason all of this is happening. And then she spent a year grieving and coping with his death, getting over him, accepting the fact that she would never see him again. Just saying, I think it's a lot more complicated than y'all made it out to be.

I think this episode is designed to be a turning point in the season. Dean and Sam both, however unhappily, re-commit to the fight and to each other, giving up friend and lover (respectively). Angel plot definitely the most interesting this episode (poor Samandriel!). I do think that in the Cas/Naomi scenes it wasn’t just an edit - he was being summoned by Naomi repeatedly while she ordered him what to do and what to say, feeding him his lines. And I love that the boys know Cas well enough that they don’t believe his explanation. They know something’s wrong and ward against him. Agree that the Amelia stuff this episode makes her really unsympathetic. I think they could have finished it off last episode - Sam looks in the window, sees she’s happily back with hubby, and leaves. Time could have been spent much better with Dean explaining to Sam exactly what happened, but Dean is still clearly angry with Sam both for abandoning him in Purgatory and for not trusting him. He’s going to have to let that go if their relationship is to be mended.

The rest of the episodes on this season are so good, can't wait to see you react to them! The next story arc is one of my absolute favourites!

Yeah, Cas and Naomi are the most interesting part of this one. I believe this is a reflection of the end of the Jimmy Novak episode (4x20) that Naomi is the person that "fixes" Cas when he starts thinking for himself. I also agree that there really is not any rational reason to compare Amelia with Benny. Amelia is a normal person from a normal life. But the boys constantly interact with supernatural beings. Dean could totally help Benny out from time to time. That ending of just the two of them sitting alone is just tragic.

I think the parallel really lies in what Dean said to Sam about having both feet in or it gets you killed. Having a life outside of hunting with someone normal will never work - as they'll always have a target on their back. And being a hunter with a monster friend won't work either. That's why the episode before this one reminded us the length a hunter will go to to kill a monster (real or perceived). And that's not the first time we've seen that - just about every other hunter they've ever shown us (with the exception of Bobby, Ellen, Jo and Garth) have always been ruthless when it comes to hunting - even when you use humans to get to them. How many times did Sam and even Dean have hunters come after them? A lot.

Diana

I get that for sure. It’s just when this episode ends for me I couldn’t help but think maybe Zachariah had a point about them clinging to each other being toxic sometimes. Hence the final scene feeling tragic instead of triumphant. I think the episode does exactly what it set out to do, I just really love Benny.

I love Benny, too. And I agree that their codependency is a little extra. But this show was always going to be just that. About Sam and Dean and their crazy lives that can't ever be normal for a multitude of reasons. It's about being okay with what you have and making something good out of it, but never having to be alone either. Gamble and Kripke's little joke about it being the epic love story of Sam and Dean told us everything we ever needed to know. It just feels strange because they're men and these particular men (meaning Sam and Dean) don't do drama like the average people. They have a lot of baggage. I found this whole arc pretty fascinating to watch, even though it wasn't the greatest execution..but I was also glad to see it be done. But also...yeah. I miss Benny.

Diana

That is interesting to hear you say, because when I think of the point of the show the thing that stands out to me is Bobby’s line at the end of season two “family don’t end with blood”. And how both Dean and Sam would not even be here in this season without the people around them that help make that a possibility. Everyone else in their life brought them to this point.
