Okay so this episode was not the best for me as it seem to try to hard to be loony. But i wanted to mention something that got deleted a few weeks back that this episode focused on a bit. What i believed the writers were going for is spelled out by the dad this episode. Sam is a maintenance guy and amelia is a vet who fixes animals. Fixers. Both sam and amelia are damaged. They are basically both the same. And the reason sam clings to her is because she fills that subconscious need he wants from dean. Amelia is to sam what benny is to dean. Amelia needs sam because she is broken and like sam said earlier this season he does not fill like dean needs him anymore. So he found someone who does. Dean in 8x6 said benny has never let him down like sam has so what he wants is a brother that trusts him. Sam and cas have never trusts him like benny. Dean and benny are similar and amelia and sam are similar.

I love this episode except for the flashbacks. Thankfully, that story is almost entirely done. Only one more episode. Had it not been for the flashbacks constantly interrupting and slowing down the pace, it could even have become a brilliant episode. Still, enough to like about it. I remember you having some concerns in the past that Cas was simply going to get away with his behaviour without suffering any consequences. I really like that that’s not the direction they decided to go. That scene between Cas and Dean is really lovely. For one thing, Dean does not normally try to get anyone to confess their feelings. It’s generally the last thing he wants. But he goes out of his way for his friend here. And Cas’ state of mind is actually quite shocking - hearing how he could even be suicidal. I think the writers went out of their way in this case to show that having Cas along would not render the boys obsolete. However, the truth is that most times, it would. They might have to do some investigation, but they’d no longer need to do any fighting or put themselves at risk. That was always their problem writing for Cas - too powerful. Another thing that bugs me about the Sam / Amelia thing is that he never tells her the truth about himself. How can that ever be a meaningful relationship? The dad spots instantly that although he might not be a soldier he has definitely fought. However, as Sam makes no effort to explain, I think the father assumes this was from criminal activities. After all, he’s not going to jump to the conclusion ‘fights supernatural monsters’, is he?

Not a fan of any of the Sam and Amelia flashbacks in this season, despite the fact that I love this season otherwise. This is a fun episode with some serious undertones. It is fun to have Cas along for the hunt even though it's sad to know that Cas is hurting inside due to the guilt of what he did in season 6/beginning of season 7. The cartoon element is fun, especially for us older fans who grew up watching many of the animated shows referenced here. Maybe at times it gets a bit too cheesy, but honestly I don't mind. Looking forward to your reactions to the 2nd half of the season.

LOVED seeing Mike Farrell in Supernatural :) (as a long-term M*A*S*H fan)

This is probably one of my favorites of the season actually. As weird as Sam and Amelia were in the previous episodes, this one really seemed to bring the story to the proper level, it didn't know it was trying to be. The writing of the running away from one thing and into another was really well handled, and I agree the Don being alive part was really intriguing. Cas's whole story line in this episode is fantastic. I agree that I was super disappointed he would only be in this one, and then not with Sam and Dean in a a string of episodes. That hotel room scene with Cas and Dean is one of my favorite scenes, because I could have totally seen Dean getting defensive when Cas yells "I said no" at him, but to see Dean really want to know what's wrong and wanting to make him feel better really spoke to Dean's character development to me. Not knowing anything about Naomi yet, really makes me nervous/suspicious of her role in the season with this episode.

Brian Markinson, who plays Amelia's father in this ep, was also in an ep back in season one. Phantom Traveler, aka the very first demon ep.

I love when they bring back actors from the early seasons.
