The reason Zuko is more conflicted and pure than Azula is because he had his mother and then Iroh once he was banished. Azula only had their father

One of my favorite (and one of the best) episodes of the series! To answer some questions: Yes, we did know Roku was a firebender. The red robes give it away, but back in 1x7 we saw him in action when his spirit overtook Aang’s to destroy the temple. Also remember the cycle: water > earth > fire > air. To go into the Avatar State you don’t have to give up love or romance, you just have to be ABLE TO LET GO of wordly attachments (like personal relationships). It’s how you reach enlightenment. Roku can love his wife and have friends, but to go into the Avatar state, he has to mentally “let go” of them in the moment. Olivia’s right, Zuko and Aang aren’t related. Aang just has the same spirit as Zuko’s maternal great-grandfather. And this wasn’t a question, but I don’t think you’re supposed to see where Sozin was coming from and kind of agree(like Thanos), what Sozin was proposing was Emperialism and Colonization. Which the U.S. has done, Great Britain has done, and many others etc. and it’s wrong. Lol They say it’s for other people’s benefit, but it’s not. That’s just how they persuade people to join them. And once people realize it’s destroying cultures and people’s lives, they too are threatened with death or exile. Last thing, toph’s last line always gets me 😭

So, Roku fighting the Volcano was a dumb move on his part. The only logical reason I can think of why he wouldn't just leave with his wife and the rest of his village was if he just wanted to preserve their houses. As for Sozin, I think he wanted to help him at first, but he had an epiphany when Roku got hit with the volcanic gas. He didn't want his friend to die, but once he inhaled the gas, Sozin just decided to fuck him over and leave. And because this is Sozin we're talking about, I think he went to help Roku so that he can try to revive their friendship and potentially recruit Roku into his plans. This was a fantastic episode in terms of world building and lore. The Zuko/Roku connection is such a fun twist at the end every time I watch it, I see it coming, but I'm still shocked.

I am so glad Greg questioned by Sozin helped Roku at the end. That never made sense to me

its about being *willing* to let go for the avatar. they can love and have children but when the time comes they have to put thier avatar responsibilities over their loved ones.

Olivia didn't have to do the cat like that, he never asked to be named Zuko :')

For sure a top 10 episode of the entire series! Such incredible writing! I believe the reason Roku fought the volcano was him trying to make the negative effects of the eruption on the earth not as terrible as it was. I absolutely love Aang's take away from the story. He see's that people are a combination of all of their choices. Sometimes people make good choices, and sometimes they make bad ones. The degree of complexity in this "kid" show to acknowledge themes like this really emphasize how stupid things like cancel culture is today. Cancel culture removes any form of communication, education, growth, and development.
