Don’t know whether you saw the message that I sent with the facts for this episode but I’ll leave them here just incase you missed it.

🟢 The picture of Lu Ten (Irohs son) is actually a depiction of Mako (Irohs voice actor) when he was young 🟢 Mako recorded this when he was dying of cancer and knew his time was near, which is why you can hear his voice break as he gets understandably emotional 🟢 Irohs new voice actor after Mako’s tragic passing still to this day refuses to sing Leaves from the Vine when asked by fans, as respect to Mako usually he says something along the line of “That’s Mako’s song” and leaves it as that. 🟢 The letter says “To General Iroh, See you after we win the war, Your loyal son, Lu Ten” 🟢 Iroh entire story in this episode is him helping everyone he can no matter how big or small their problem, which makes it all the more emotional when he concludes with saying “if only I could have helped you” to his son he has lost. Which gives him so much more reason to keep hoping and helping his Nephew Zuko as much as he can so as to not lose him too. 🟢 Iroh was saying goodbye to his son, Mako was saying goodbye to us the viewers.

Yeah! I'm now caught up on the watch along. After this season you should watch the Chibi shorts they made. They're so cute!

I was so sad when I learned Mako passed. He brought so much to the role of Iroh. But I also loved this tribute.

This is one of the best written episodes for Avatar the last Airbender. Always makes me cry. Never forget this episode.

My favorite has to be the Iroh one. He's been such a great father figure to Zuko all along, and he even had a fatherly moment with Toph. Seeing him parent everyone he comes across in his story just really drove home for me the idea that he mourns not only his son but his opportunity to actually be a father since he was too focused on being a fire nation general to really be a father while he had the chance. The way he sang "Leaves of the Vine" to cheer up the crying child early in his story and to mourn his son at the end of the story? *chef's kiss* I absolutely love how the shift in tone of the song changed so much of how we perceived the moment when it was sang. It also makes me wonder if Iroh used to comfort his son by singing that same song or if he sang it to the child because it is a song that comforts Iroh. I also really love the subtle worldbuilding the writers put in that song. The fire nation has been at war for 100 years, so of course they would have "folk songs" centered around soldiers coming home (whether alive or not).

In my head canon, I always thought Lu Ten was asking for reinforcements to better defend his position. Iroh refused to send any soldiers because he was so preoccupied with the Siege of Ba Sing Se. This would explain why Iroh said he wished he could have helped. Iroh’s selfishness hurt someone a long time ago, now he only helps others rather than himself. P.S. Thank for you reading my comment from the previous episode.

The exploration of character's in this episode is so fantastic. To this day, I cannot watch the tale of Iroh without crying. It is just so rich, and says so much about his life. It, paired with the passing of his voice actor, hits so hard.
