I do think that sometimes J2M do annoy the crew a bit because there are times when they won't stop mucking about and the crew just want to go home. But weighing pros and cons, provided they don't do it too often, most of them seem to appreciate them keeping the atmosphere good on set. I think they sometimes just keep the cameras rolling rather than doing a new take each time so that the guys blow off some energy before doing it properly.

I think there are lots of times where this joking and such happens in between takes, or when they know the camera isn't on them. The actors love to mess with each other that way. Jim Beaver is a great character actor. He's been in a lot of things. Some times when you get a lot of bloopers from just one or two episodes, it's due to the director. They have to make a point of keeping "junk" footage and tag it for the blooper reel. Not every director does that. Plus, one of the directors usually does the gag reels, so there may be more of the stuff from his episodes than others.

Like to point out the hilarious editing 2:40 "what kind of douchebag names a character after himself" while cutting to scenes with set douchebag messing up things.😂

The directors and others are totally in on it. J2 operate as a tag-team to provoke/prank just about everyone. Getting someone to break character is the ultimate victory in these battles, of course. So those working on set conspire and take advantage of the opportunities presented to get J2. Essentially, we're watching a medley of goofing around, bad takes and a subtle form of scripted improv/reaction victories documented on camera.

Jim Beaver is an amazing writer. His book about his first wife is heartbreaking and honest about his grief, sounds dire, i know, but I still highly recommend!

Haha I could definitely see that. Obviously, you don't want blooping to just absorb all the work, but it can be good for morale. A good amount of these do appear to be sort of in-between or in the middle of setups haha.

Ahhh, interesting! Appreciate the insight haha, it hit me reading this that I've never really thought much about how these are assembled & who takes care of that. I know these are often first assembled for wrap parties & such, but that makes a lot of sense re: the directors. Gotta imagine some folks come thru either with little in the way of flubs, or just.. no time for that shit.. lol

These definitely have a sort of fraternal, boisterous vibe haha. And that's a dynamic I definitely grab from each of these lol - that gleeful pursuit of making one of the others break. Makes me miss improv lol

It wasn't his idea btw, he said in interviews that he didn't really want to do that but Kripke or some other producer thought the name "fits" the character. So he's not so egotistical, but egotistical enough to put himself in scenes like that one that I mentioned.😂

Yeah. Jared and Jensen have said that they will sometimes make a point to ask for some footage to be kept and marked for the gag reels.

I really love that they include crew in these gag reels, but it often occurs to me - what if you were watching these without knowing anything about SPN? It would be so easy to pick out the stars of the show - they're the ones whose looks really stand out. Suddenly you see an excessive dose of pulchritude. We all know that the cast of SPN are all brilliant actors as well (which is why we love Sam, Dean and Cas), but it's a reminder of the real life aspect of the business too. You don't get those parts in the first place unless you look good.
