I love this episode, from the writing, execution and acting!

One of my favorite episodes for sure.

Great episode unveiling all that has been happening behind the scenes with Cas. What’s also interesting is that the writer of the episode, Ben Edlund, also got to direct. So rare in episodic tv that someone gets to write the script and bring it to screen. Pretty sure he is my favorite writer in the first half of the series.

Well, here it is, my favorite episode of S6 and one of my favorite episodes of all of SPN. Boy oh boy, is there a LOT to talk about. First of all, can we just appreciate how freaking good Misha Collins is in this episode?! Cas has been my favorite character since S4 mostly because of how Misha plays him; so mysterious, complex and layered. There's always just so much to appreciate in his performance. And FINALLY they let Cas be the BAMF that we all know he can be! That part where he stopped the demon from smoking out was WILD! I love how conflicted this episode makes Cas. Because the whole season, all he does is warn how he has to defeat Raphael or else he will kill the world, but until this point it's just kind of a vague threat. Knowing that he wants to just reset the Apocalypse brings so much clarity. And here's Cas, thinking about what they all, ESPECIALLY Dean and Sam, had to go through to stop it. There is NO WAY he would let those sacrifices be for nothing. I love that his first impulse was to go to Dean for help. But again, thinking about everything he went through, it would make sense that he wouldn't want to bring this to him. Because at this point, Dean is still grieving Sam's death and trying to process everything and get used to living a "normal life". Can you imagine what that would do to him? Knowing that despite everything they sacrificed to stop it, that there are still those that want to and can disregard all of that and let the Apocalypse just go ahead? As a being who is still new to the level of emotions he has, it's no wonder that Cas makes the choice that he does. He would never want to hurt Dean in that way. Stupid, but true. I also love how we find out that Cas is the one who brought Sam back. There was a lot of debate over whether he actually did bring Sam back soulless on purpose, because he brought Dean back whole. Personally, I think that Cas didn't account for the different circumstances both brothers were in. When Cas saved Dean from Hell, it was just his soul that he was pulling out. His body had been ripped apart and buried. Whereas Sam fell into Lucifer's cage, body AND soul. I think that he didn't think about how different and much more difficult that would be. I don't know if it was necessarily arrogance or hubris, but it was something. Maybe a level of ignorance or just inexperience... Cas and Dean's connection has always been one of my favorite things about this show. I love Sam and Dean's brotherly connection, too, but again, I think there is something so much more complexity to Cas and Dean's. Seeing how hurt Dean was that Sam and Bobby were right was so hard. Like you guys said, he's usually the first one to be distrustful when he feels something is "fishy" but with Cas he just didn't want to believe it (even though like Cas said, his instincts were telling him they were right). UUUUGGGGHHHHHH SO GOOD!!!! As always, I love watching your reactions and I appreciate your discussions so much! I'm super excited for the last few of this season.

I. Love. This. Episode. And I loved your reaction to it!! Cas and Dean break my heart. Dean's face when Cas starts talking about Superman 💔💔. You're right, while they are all friends, Cas and Dean are closer than the others. After all, Dean is the one who convinced Cas to turn his back on the angels (Season 4 finale). And Jensen and Misha have (and always have had) the most amazing onscreen chemistry, which makes it all totally believable. Truth comes out - this season has been kind of like a magician's assistant - keeping you looking the wrong way the whole time. Sam's soul, Crowley, Alphas, Eve. Even maybe the Campbells. All apparent bad guys. Crowley claiming responsibility for bringing Sam back from Hell - again, distracting from Castiel as the focus of the season. I can tell you're already looking back at it and seeing how everything clicks into place. If you watch the season again (sometime in the distant future!) you'll see how everything looks very different. Oh, and Misha - eyes open, definitely!! He has the most incredibly blue eyes. Even bluer in RL 😍😍😍 😂😂😂

Don't forget - Dean was in Hell, Sam was in the Cage. Different location. Probably harder for Cas to get Sam out from there. Evidently more than he could actually handle, as he messed up.

This is an amazing episode. And I agree with you that this is a cool season in the way the revelations come and make story click together, The previous seasons are an epic culmination of one story, and this season is like a little mystery that slowly unfolds as it goes on. It's not a bad season at all. I think it just ledt some people a little underwhelmed after the high of season 5. I felt like that too when I was watching live.

This is one of my favorite episodes! Cas and Dean are my favorite characters and it always breaks my heart to watch them fall apart in this episode. This episode is also so genius for giving Cas the narration. It really makes you empathize with him and why he has made his decisions.

Toasted Toad

I don't see any basis for debate about whether Cas brought Sam back soulless on purpose. That's muddled thinking. Cas brought Sam back BEFORE he had started dealing with Crowley. There is no possible reason for him deliberately leaving Sam's soul behind.

Kristin Dorner

I never even considered the thought that he did it on purpose, even back when I first watched the episode. However, I have seen debates about it over the years. It’s not a popular theory, most of it I’ve seen from Cas haters.

This is for sure another one of those top 10 episodes of the series! The way the details line up, and you can see everyone's perspectives, is wonderful. A tragedy from the human perspective was the perfect description. Every actor knocks their performance out of the park!
