I believe this still aired in 16:9, and is 16:9 on the DVD's, so not sure why this version is so cropped... ah well it's no biggie. This is my favourite xmas special so far too.

I’ve only ever heard the name Gibbzee in Failwhale’s Doctor Who reactions. Would you happen to be said Gibbzee? If so you’re a funny fucking editor dude.

Really? This is one of my least favourites!! I think they had a good run in later years, but early Xmas specials didn't do it for me. So I'll see you in the next reaction!

I definitely prefer voyage of the damned to the other two, but it pales in comparison to the next few. Especially

Yeah its so good. The reason the hosts work is the same reason why weeping angels work. Theyre scary because theyre angels which are meant to represent purity and yet theyre sinister (perverted antithesis) But their relationship with the protagonists is so important. The characters have a small control over them. With weeping angels the control is that if they look at them the angels turn to stone. With the hosts, it's the three questions. Love this episode. So well written, acted, and directed.

I loved this way more than I even remembered. It’s not like the most genius plot or anything but all the characters are so rich and like you said the acting is so great. It’s one of the most high stakes DW episodes in terms of character peril and is just so wholesome and heartwarming in the end. Also really sad how it goes from the Doctor basically scouting a new companion because Martha told him not to travel by himself to him becoming enamored with Astrid, to her death, to him at the end saying “I travel alone.” Especially after her dying after he already decided “no more” when Foon sacrificed herself. The actor who played Midshipman Alonzo is named Russell Tovey. Yup, he’s a pretty successful British TV actor. I think he’s actually such an incredible actor that more should know. I know and love him from the show Being Human, a dark, hilarious, horror show about a vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf sharing a house and trying to fit in with humanity despite being nightmarish monsters. It’s one of my all time favorite shows and even the US SYFY adaption of it is really good. Tovey plays George, the werewolf of the trio.

I think the reason they stuffed a trailer right before the credits is because Doctor Who at this time was watched by an insane amount of people on Christmas (I think this episode was watched by 13.3 million on Christmas evening?), and they wanted to show off the next series while they stil had everyone's attention.

I believe for the rest of the seasons it’s shown after the credits and not before, so hopefully it won’t happen again, I have said to them several times since the pilot to click off immediately after the Christmas episodes due to the next season trailers and thankfully they have for the other two, it’s just unfortunate that this episode decided to play it immediately before the credits started.

This is one of those mixed response episodes. I'm really glad you both liked it a lot. It made a much more enjoyable reaction than it has been previously. You guys made me enjoy the episode more. I can't wait for series 4 reactions, one of my fav Who series.
