Honestly I was dubious about watching this, because I really don't like this two parter. I know it is important for later on but honestly not that great. Glad you weren't too much of a fan also

Only 3.5???!!!! This is a majorly cool episode! Although perhaps it doesn't read as well without the second part - will have to watch (although I don't have time now unfortunately). I love the weirdness of the boy playing the alien. Although maybe I didn't the first time I watched? I can't remember. Funny how your view can change with time and re-watches. Sometimes when you know what's going to happen (I'm looking at you, Supernatural Season 6!) it can change your view. Do you think your reaction might have changed had you known it was a 2 parter? If you think it has to be settled in one episode, you can get more annoyed by a slow build. If you know they've got 2 episodes, it feels a good amount of time to get you invested. You keep saying 'it's not real', but it *is* real. They haven't put the Doctor into a holo-deck or something. They haven't hypnotised everyone or anything. They've just managed to insert themselves into a RL school back in the past. Martha's mooning over the Doctor is something most people hated about her character. And it's not just that the Doctor doesn't reciprocate - he doesn't even notice. As soon as he becomes 'human', he falls into a romantic relationship, but as the Doctor, Rose was the first to get him that way. He is not human. He thinks differently. He doesn't even see humans the same way we do.

"The TARDIS chooses the best place" The writers want to blame the time travel box for putting Martha in this god awful situation even when there's literally a million other places it could have dropped her off. ugh these episodes make me so mad

Maybe I've missed it but have any of the facts mentioned the choice of John Smith as his alias in this series? :P

Before the season started I said that this season was my most and least favorite and you guys are definitely far enough to see why- they treat Martha *terribly* She's so obviously capable, my personal favorite companion and all they do is make her suffer! There's episodes that I truly love as stand alones but all together it's just a really sad story for Martha. (Also yeah the Doctor looks like a giant, inconsiderate dick)

Just checked, turns out I didn’t, what fact would you put in? Should I just mention he has been using that alias through Classic who aswell and the idea that the reason we use John smith as an alias is because throughout history the doctor has been mysteriously appearing to people as “John Smith” or the Doctor and as a result we use John smith for people we don’t really know anything about/ the persons real name.

Until looking into it, I thought it started with the 3rd Doctor when he needed a name to register with when he started working for Unit during his exile but apparently it started when the 2nd was asked his name and Jamie McCrimmon responded John Smith.
