Personally I really can't stand this season, this episode especially, just not my cup of tea. Pretty much felt like the writers panicked in regards to getting the show going again. But hey it's not unwatchable. And it does get better as the season goes on.

Like I said in another comment - there's *one* perfect episode of SPN and it's in this season, but seasons 6 and 7 are easily my least favorite of the entire run (even Jensen has said he doesn't like 6 and 7). Sera Gamble was Kripke's pick as his successor - and she was, in fact, a writer/exec producer on the show from basically the beginning - but she's definitely a better writer than she is a showrunner.

I didn’t even want to sit through this episode for the reaction, lol. I skipped straight to the review. And this won’t be the last time that happens, sadly. I completely agree with what you said about feeling like a pilot or sequel. But there are some episodes (and seasons) coming up that are pure gold and I can’t wait for those reactions.

I haven’t seen this episode in a long time..I agree that it feels like a sequel but I the show does get better..The first episode of season 6 is so different from future episodes and future seasons..So if you didn’t really like the style of this episode don’t worry, it gets better..There’s a reason why supernatural has so many season, it’s because it’s honestly so good..My favorite supernatural seasons are seasons 7,8,9,11..I don’t remember if I liked season 6 more then Season 5 but from what I remember it’s a good season.

I understand you guys having difficulty formulating your thoughts on this one. It's perhaps not the best season opener. However, I do have some thoughts (sorry, a bit of a long comment again! I'll try to keep them shorter!) 1. I've said this elsewhere, but I'll repeat - I think this season is very underrated, and that's because a lot does not become clear until later. So on a second watch, when you know where it's going, you re-evaluate what you were seeing, and things that you initially found problematic become actually really good (that was a terrible sentence, but I can't be bothered to re-write!!).This season does have some fairly big twists. It's not like Season 5 where we all knew what was going on and it was just a case of how we would get there. There's a lot that's still unanswered here, a lot more mystery. And that's about the most I can say here without spoilers. 2. I think what upset fans most was that they didn't get their bro hug. Or rather, they did, but it wasn't emotionally fulfilling. Sam was kind of indifferent, like you said.   3. I also liked the montage at the beginning of Dean's current and former life. I thought that was really well put together, and possibly the most successful part of the episode. 4. Dean's mental health is clearly not the best either (when has it ever been?). And like you say, I think that that's something they could have done better. In the montage, they didn't show anything of the bad side of Dean's current life. He says he's been a wreck, and I believe it, but we haven't seen anything of it. So you made a lot of very valid points, but you don't have the full picture yet. Give the writers some of the benefit of the doubt like you were suggesting!

He's said he doesn't like talking about either 6 *or* 7, which pretty much says it all, as far as I'm concerned.

*vigorously nods head while reading* I haven't watched the reaction yet, and might add more but I agree with this comment. Kripke was much more...simple with his formula, which allows for less mystery at times, but feels much more comfortable for the viewer. Gamble is willing to take more risks, and prefers the long game. Sometimes it works better than others, but it's very satisfying when that moment happens and you see the full picture. Even now, after all the times I've watched this season...it's still a thrill. Also keep in mind that even though Gamble was at the helm, Kripke put a lot of work into this season, too. Just from behind the scenes. I've said somewhere before, those who participate in the fandom have biases about this season that don't necessarily reflect the viewing audience. I don't care either way, as it's just an observation. Like the season or not, ratings were the same as S4, and the show had been moved to the Friday night death spot. That's not bad all things considered.

I often talk about the atmosphere/tone of a season. It's basically in how it's shot and the color saturation, etc. I think you're right Greg. There was a lot in this episode in maybe trying to set up the season in this one episode. Maybe. New showrunners, leadership team, they are eager and such. Starting off at a run instead of using training wheels at first. I also would have liked them to stretch things out some more with the beginning of this season. They have enough episodes to do that, but I think they were just in a hurry to get things going and I don't think they are really into dean's domestic life right now, but more into getting things goin.
