pros to this episode: action is great. interesting story. cas? hilarious. sam gets to flirt w cute bartender. also, sams hair looks better than it has all season, which is saying something lol. cons: cas calls sam an abomination and that is not nice to sam 😥. dean intrudes on this poor womans life then immediately leaves again? rude lol. and it isnt made clear why exactly dean is the true servant of heaven but ok. glad u guys rly seem to love castiel as much as we all do! u can see why he's such a fan favorite ❤

Hey guys - our second SPN episode of the week. What a treat! Not my favourite episode this one, but it is important (all of them are important at this stage). Don't really know why - maybe it's because I don't like anything about religious fundamentalism, maybe I didn't particularly like the character actors. We never really had any sympathy for the woman who lost her son. I can't remember why it's called 99 Problems, but the title is no coincidence - the next episode is the 100th episode, so it's a good marker! Cas definitely has the best moments in this episode. Especially his "it's funnier in Enochian", which is perhaps one of my favourite of his lines. I don't think Dean is in love with Lisa at this point. He dreams about her (as we learned in a previous season), but I think it's more about her as a possibility of what he might have had, and what he longs for underneath it all - a wife and kid, a normal life. Once again, I like SPN's clever little twist on things - in what other show would a character "finding his faith" and being on the side of Heaven be a sad thing? ETA: Also very sad that Sam is failing to get Dean to accept the 'we're in this together'. The previous episode was probably the tipping point for Dean. Throwing away the amulet was very much not just about God.

Hey guys! I am so happy to finally catch up. I have seen your reactions to SPN conventions and pleged to you cause wanted to watch along with you. It's my first time rewatching the series and I wouldn't watch if it wasn't for you, just wanted to share the experience. I didn't expect it to take 3 weeks to catch you though but I am glad to get through before the next and 100th episode of the show. I hope you keep watching after season 5 because there are so much episodes I think you'd like to see, some aspects of the show gets better in last seasons and I know yoy probably heard it before but it really comes full circle. They are very clever at tying the knots that has been left open. Also I appreciate that you took time to watch conventions, the experience of the show feeds from SPN family. Cast, crew, fans being a family is one of the reasons show lasted for this long and fandom will keep going even after the shows finale. I'd really like to see you diving deeper into the fandom 😊 Well John seems to be faster at that then Greg. I liked tired Greg, him trying explain the episode was funny. It is good to remember all the details and hints looking back. I didn't remember this episode much and when they start exorcising demons with three word I was like why didn't they use it again this easy effectfull method 😄 also the dead guys mother only hesitating after they have to burn those people, what was she thinking when she locked kids there to. Cas' interaction with Sam is so funny, but its sad to seem so lost. From Sam's reaction to Dean being able to kill the whore, I guess he started to consider sayin yes to Michael, Story will heat up from now on. I hope you like where it goes. P.S: I am sorry for poor grammar and possible typos, I have gotten rusty in English, a lot.

I think the implication is that Dean is a true servant of heaven because he's made up his mind at that point to say yes to Michael.

Mishalangelo's Apprentice

I thinks Dean is in love with the idea of apple pie life more than Lisa. Like, he see being in her life is most possible way to normal life. Maybe I feel that way because they didn't fill foundation of their relationship enough. Like Greg said, she is a good person but I only care about her cause Dean cares about her. Still I don't feel like Dean trully loves her.

Great reaction & review! On Dean going to see Lisa - I think he always harboured a tiny hope that that happy life with her could actually happen someday. Not that he genuinely thought it could happen, but the flicker of the dream was there. I think there's a huge "what could have been" factor for him with Ben and Lisa...They're the closest thing he has to a family of his own. It might be more about what she represents to him than about his actual feelings for her, but I think it makes sense that she's someone he'd want to see before he doing this thing that will be the end of his life as he knows it. And hell yes I love drunk Cas 😁 Next ep is their 100th episode, really looking forward to seeing what you guys make of it!

I've been waiting for you to see this episode! It's actually one of my favorites :) though the whole season is honestly close to perfection lol Personally, this ep kind of gives me Faith (season 1), Croatoan (season 2) and The End (this season) vibes with the aesthetics, the themes of faith and hope, and the community-wide participation in the Apocalypse. A few things I wanted to point out- 1. It's widely assumed that Dean could kill tWoB because he made up his mind to say yes to Michael, which is honestly heartbreaking taken with the theme of faith, because Dean isn't making choices out of hope or even because he wants to, but rather out of despair and giving out. 2. I love seeing the contrast between the brothers- Sam is determined and even angry, because for him, stopping the Apocalypse is more than saving the world- it's also his own personal redemption journey after his decisions and actions in season 4. For Dean, though, it feels more distant- his purpose is saving people and doing what he can, but when there is nothing you can do, what is left? 3. Cas is freaking hilarious here and I love every moment he appears. His own lack of hope and disillusionment is another play on the ep's themes and meshes well with the brothers' own issues. Poor guy can't catch a break but would still do what he can to help out<3 4. This ep mirrors season 1's "Faith" really well both with Dean's "destiny" and his issues with faith. In "Faith" we had Layla, who was dying and was very much a "Virgin Mary" type of character (though she did have more depth to her), while here we have Leah, who is the exact opposite. We also had the "grieving mother blaming Dean" scene in both eps, basically asking why he gets to live while their children die. We also have a determined, still hopeful Sam and a ready to throw in the towel Dean in both, and I love it! 5. I actually love Lisa, and while I think at this point Dean is more in love with the idea of her and the kind of life she represent to him, I honestly think she is one of the best love interests for him on the show. I could go on and on lol. This ep is really so amazing and made me care about those one-and-done characters (the bartender, the kid that died, the pastor)... Can't wait for your reaction to the next ep, guys! Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk LOL

I agree regarding Ben and Lisa. I never felt Dean was in love with her, but more he was in love with the idea of the normal life he could have had in a different time and place.

This episode is always ruined for me by the ending, but that's mostly because after 10 yrs I'm still bitter they teased Dean & Jo in this season only to kill her off and bring back Lisa (who I've never cared for), and yes at the time a lot of people couldn't even remember who Lisa and Ben were and why Dean would go see her. Anyway, enough of my b*trying about a decade old episode. Love the rest of the episode and liked your reaction as I almost always do!

L McB

Stupid autocorrect. Should've said b*tching.

This episode had a lot of potential, but ended up not meeting that for me after about half way in. I think it was how the people of the town were done - how they acted. Could have been because it was crunched into one episode. Plus it's not very enjoyable seeing people being so extremely stupid. I know it was meant to show us where Sam, Dean, and Cas were at this point in their mental states. The Sam, Dean and Cas parts registered more with me than what was happening in the town. Does seem like Dean made a decision there at the end and he wanted to see Lisa before he did what he had planned. We found out in season 3 that he had dreams about her and thought about her and Ben, so not too far fetched that it has continued and that he might want to see her. He went to see her in season 3 when he knew his life was ending, so he's wanting to see her again because he must think of what he's planning as also an ending. But also, probably wanted to give her a head's up about what's coming. Nice to think that he is planning on making sure they will be okay, seeing as how he knows that what's coming could mean is a lot of people dying.

Artverse

Dean only went to see Lisa so she wouldn't freak out and make any rash decisions when seeing the fallout of the Lucifer and Michael fight. If he didn't visit her, she wouldn't know they were protected. She could end up splitting up from Ben, thinking he'd have a better chance somewhere else, or something similar. And him saying he saw himself happy with them was partially his feeling leaking out and to explain partially why he'd have them protected.
