Hey there, Patron-O-Jects!

Firstly, I hope this finds you all safe & well during this obviously tense & fascinating moment in time & history.

We just wanted to take a quick moment to let y'all know that we, too, will be participating in BLACKOUT TUESDAY, so our normal posting schedule will be paused for the day (expect a double dose tomorrow lol).

Naturally though, as many have informed us, this is NOT a day for complete silence, so in the spirit of this #BlackoutTuesday, PLEASE feel free to FILL THIS COMMENT THREAD with your favorite Black artists, speakers, channels, businesses, organizations, etc. - the more, the merrier!  Or if you'd just like to share your personal experience, that's welcome too - all we ask is we keep this respectful & for the good.

Today is as much about elevating & celebrating the voices of People of Color as much as it is about taking pause.

We love you all & are eternally grateful for your support over time, especially when the world is upside down.

All the love-

Greg & John

Given the current situation, I highly recommend Ava DuVernay's documentary 13th that is available on Netflix. It is both a very comprehensive view on the systematic disenfranchisement of Black people since the civil war, and just in terms of craftsmanship and filmmaking one of the best documentaries I have seen.

There are a couple of people I grew up listening to/knowing about. It often felt like I was alone in caring about these issues, since I grew up in an area of mostly white protestants and catholics. But the figures that resonated with me and helped me think beyond my little bubble of a world were Mia Angelou, Martin Luther King, Jr. , Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Sidney Poitier, etc. A few movies really affected me at a young age when I first saw them. They include To Kill A Mockingbird (read book first), They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, A Raisin in the Sun, etc. There really were a lot when you think about it. Too bad things really haven't changed that much since then.

I really respect you guys for doing this and not staying silent. The Black people i have learned a lot from on youtube are AdrianXpression amandabb nappyheadedjojoba MacDoesIt Jackie Aina Calvin Michaels KevOnStage For Harriet All of them provide commentary on racism in their own way.

For book recommendations on this topic, I would suggest The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein The fire next time by James Baldwin White Fragility by Robin Diangelo The new jim crow by Michelle Alexander How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi Don't call us dead by Danez Smith Between the world and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates Men we reaped by Jesmyn Ward These are just the ones i have read, there is a lot more i have to educate myself on. Hope someone finds this helpful. The Rapper NONAME has a book club on twitter that i would recommend for anyone it's @NonameBooks

Two articles I have found interesting/informative are In defense of looting by vicky osterweil Link is - https://thenewinquiry.com/in-defense-of-looting/ Kendrick Sampson: Why I’m Protesting to Defund Police Link is - https://variety.com/2020/voices/news/kendrick-sampson-why-i-am-protesting-to-defund-police-los-angeles-protests-1234622000/ . Thanks for doing this. It is great to know that the people you support are not only understanding of the pain and suffering but are also doing their part to change things. 🖤

I agree with this pick. I would like to add her miniseries When They see us, it is a hard but must watch, I couldn't finish it, I had to stop after the second episode.

I recommend reading "A Question of Freedom: A Memoir of Learning, Survival, and Coming of Age in Prison" by Reginald Dwayne Betts. It's a memoir about his experience with the prison industrial complex as a Black man/teen. I went to college with him for a very short time and he was an amazing thinker and orator. We only had a couple of classes together but he was truly a pleasure to learn with. In terms of just general works by Black artists, I always recommend Janet Mock's "Redefining Realness" for another non-fiction memoir. For sci-fi/fantasy fiction (my favorite genre), I recommend the works of N. K. Jemisin and Octavia E. Butler.

I read Parable of the talent by Octavia E. Butler with out reading Parable of the sower first. I didn't know it was the second book. Parable of the Sower is on my list of books to read. Thanks for the other recommendations.

I'm realizing I need to consume a lot more Black media & follow more educators, but as far as SFF authors, can definitely recommend Nnedi Okorafor, N.K. Jemisin, L.L. McKinney, & Daniel Jose Older, to start off with.
