A series that has a really good blend of CGI is Beastars. Its on Netflix and its in my top 3 anime of 2019

This felt like a much stronger episode than the firstone . Be it from directing standpoint, visually, tonally/atmosphere wise. IDK like it had more restraint but at the same time felt more effective of what it wanted to achieve , for the most part. I also think our main 3 leads , their characterization via situational awareness and just how they went about their plans and reacting to some situation was a much better characterization tool than straight up telling their character sheet, like in first ep, lol. I especially liked Norman's reason why he's okay with risking everything , i thought his reasoning was quite mature as far as character writing goes , him liking Emma, despite knowing how absurd it is to try to save everyone . Its not practical but that self awareness , i really liked . And Ray's more cynical approach to this kinda evens out Emma optimism and naivety. Theres a good character dynamic , even if a bit basic one . Also about anime colors . Im sure same thing applies to eye colors . But from what i know, anime character designs , esepcially hair colour plays a huge part in how these fall into archetypes . And its a lot easier to set up their quirks visually, without dialogue . For example red haired characters are usually passionate, energetic , high tempered . White /silver haired like Norman , these characters are calm, intelligent , sensitive and usually good natured . Orange haired are usually like red haired, optimistic, high energy , a bit too attention seeking . While black haired, the most normal color and found in real life usually is associated with traditional, intelligence, thinking outside the box . Of course all these things arent 1:1 and its not as one note, but more often than not, the hair color can be a good sign of guessing archetype and behavior . As for the ep overall , like i said it felt like a much stronger, more focused and executed episode . It had better handle on tone and pacing and the character interactions while not subtle felt a lot more natural and in world than straight up telling the viewer how these characters are . lol

Fun fact: Ray and Killua from HxH share a voice actress, Mariya Ise! I hear Killua every time Ray talks...

Ooh, neato! Seems like they've been pushing it a lot more on our Netflix lately.. Tempted to give it a try, but then I also get paranoid about potentially doing reactions in the future 😅 I'm glad the bridge between the animation techniques is getting stronger. I feel like it's more often now I'll see a CG shot or effect put to keen use..

2021-07-15 04:50:23 Glad you were more into this one!! Thought it built nicely on the first, especially in the visual/atmospheric department. Really enjoying their choices of color, focus, where to put CG, etc. And I agree haha, much better revealing the characterization through the kids learning/trying to cope with the situation, sizing up their odds & limitations. The mystery naturally propels that. And that's a nice call re: Norman! I had to chew on it a minute or two when I was first watching, but I think you hit the nail on the head - the reasoning. He's well aware of the odds, limits, & stakes, but love is irrational. And I like that motif of the smile, keeping her smiling, just because smiling (at least at the current moment) has become a disguise of sorts. So truly keeping her happy is a really sweet goal. And I like the balance all the 3 voices bring to the mix, especially as that moment plays. Interesting re: the color coding. I guess it makes sense it'd be most closely linked with hair. We used to get really particular about these things back in the day haha. And now I just find myself curious while watching these various shows wondering, "did they wanna say something specific about this character... or was this just what the design called for?" Either way, I'm very glad this episode smoothed out for ya. Hopefully it continues that streak moving forward!

Yesss haha! Sounded sorta familiar that first ep. Someone had to clue me in, but a part of me was definitely listening for/thinking of Killua during Ray's scenes this ep. 😂 Mariya Ise must have quite the career these days!
