Thanks Guys! I really appreciate how thoughtful your response was to the episode. I think the first 3 really set a precedent for the breadth of the show. Doctor Who can go anywhere!

Hmmm...to answer if The Doctor travelled there by chance or because he knew there was a situation...the Doctor has a way of turning up where he’s needed. Almost always unintentionally. They’ll create some reasoning behind it, but for now just think of it all as unplanned. Later it’s also inferred that they do a lot of traveling in between episodes that isn’t as eventful and we only see the interesting parts. Sometimes they really do just go sightseeing, but what kind of show would that be? It’s Doctor Who. You’ll learn there’s always some crazy new adventure going on! And as for the Doctor knowing what’s going to happen...it kind of works like someone who’s a history buff. He has a massive over view of all of history’s events and cultures, but he doesn’t always know or remember all the details...and so he travels to experience them himself

Another great reaction and glad you both enjoyed the episode. :)

I think the theme for me is idea of finality. Interesting how the villain has quite literally stretched out her existence. She is the last of her kind. The Doctor is revealed to be the last of his. It is the Earth's final day. With all the places to go, when the landscape is all of time and space. It's a figurative end that we travel to for the second outing. The show had been off the air for quite a number of years and it was a bit of a gamble to try and bring it back at the time. Interesting that they played with the notion of an end at the beginning.

Loving your Who reactions so far! You commented on how you hadn't really been prepared for what you were getting - I think that now you've seen a few episodes, you understand why it's so difficult for people to explain what the programme is. There isn't an easy description. I love the character expansion in this episode. Rose has sort of been drawn on with the excitement so far, and then suddenly had this WTF am I doing? moment. And as well as the Doctor's past, we see more of the other side of the Doctor's character - he can be fun and curious and ligh-hearted and knowledgeable, but he can also be quite ruthless. "Everything has its time and everything dies". Don't get on his bad side! The question about whether he deliberately goes where he's needed, or just always manages to stumble on something is an interesting one. I'm reminded of an interview with Patrick Stewart where they commented on the same thing - the universe is huge, and most of it is empty. How come the Enterprise manages to find a new problem each mission? And he replied that most of the time, they didn't. They just didn't film those episodes.

(my thoughts are numbered for the sake of organization, sorry!) 1. So so much great satire and social commentary in this episode! It’s what the best sci-fi does, it holds up a mirror to the audience. The earth exploding 5 billion years from now, knowing you and everyone youve ever known will be dead? It's obviously nothing to worry about, but it’s still a very spooky thought. 2. “Everything has its time and everything dies.” oof! Stone fucking cold. That's one of my favorite things about the Doctor, he can be dancing along to tainted love in one scene, and stand by and watch a woman literally snap apart in another. 3. My favorite side character in this ep is the little blue guy in the chair 4. typical, the people of color die first (this is a blue person joke lol) Yeah now that greg is more prepared for the world of this show, what he’s stepping into, i would recommend not watching the “next time” previews. All in all a great episode w a great reaction and discussion! Loved what you had to say about it and excited for whats next! :)

For most episodes, I think the doctor happens to come across a situation that needs his help unexpectedly but there are some episodes where he's recieved a cry for help first. It's also implied that they travel between episodes so I would say a crisis doesn't happen everywhere the doctor goes, just a lot.

Aw, no problem! Really happy you enjoyed! 😊 we always do our best to keep things fun & thoughtful. Loving the setup so far & the scope of possibilities opening up. Can’t wait to get further in!

That’s a great breakdown, appreciate that! I suppose that makes a lot of sense haha - us getting to essentially see the most thrilling/intense highlights of their journey(s) thru the galaxy. I like your history-buff comparison. Seems like part of the charm as well that The Doctor has a habit of turning up where/when needed. Really loving all the little quirks and details that come with this show (so far.). Just got a real bubbly personality I quite enjoy. Looking forward to more!!!

Damn, that’s a great observation, that is pretty interesting! And then you’ve also got Rose’s retort that, given the villain’s physical state, she (Rose) is actually the true last human.. at least in that room. I’d be curious to hear some writers’ commentaries on some of these episodes, but it does seem like a pretty fun/cheeky prospect to start your show with “the end of the world” haha.

thereelrejects

Ahhh okay, good to know! I guess that’d make a lot of sense between those 3 options. And I do appreciate the whimsy of them just happening upon these crisis situations so often.

thereelrejects

Aw thanks, I'm so glad to hear that!! Been having a lot of fun shooting these so far :) really happy everybody seems to be diggin' on them! Can certainly see how this'd be a bit of an odd-duck in terms of an elevator pitch (...or a phonebooth pitch) haha, but that makes it all-the-more charming. Great call with Rose! Really appreciated that contrast from the first episode, her being so gung-ho for the adventure and then the more sober realities creeping back in here in this one. And then, yeah, to get both the hard-line side of the doctor with "everything dies" AND the hints toward his tragic past I thought made for some great contrast to his lighter, more whimsical qualities. And I guess that'd make a good amount of sense re: how they happen upon these kinds of scenarios. Just sitting here now, I kinda feel like I should've assumed that lol. Was also sorta figuring that perhaps that "psychic field" the TARDIS has might also have something to do with that. Still, though, I think it'd be funny if they filmed just one of those uneventful sightseeing episodes 😝

2021-07-15 04:51:59 Haha all good!! 1. Right?? I love the layers that got brought up throughout this one. Especially that weird, removed position Rose winds up in - kinda like you said, she's so far removed to the point that it's not actually much to worry about, but at the same time... it's such a significant & horrifying event.. such is the nature of the Universe, I suppose! 2. That line hit like a splash of cold water haha. That's been one of the aspects I appreciate most about Eccleston, his balance of the whimsy with the darker, more painful/hard-line aspects of (his take on) The Doctor. 3. Aww haha, didn't the poor guy get scorched?!? Moment of silence for the li'l blue chair guy 😂😭 4. LOL but also fair 😅I still feel bad for Raffalo, she was so sweet!!! The next times are easy to fall into as they precede the credits, but we'll do our best to remember to stop them from here on haha. Either way tho, really glad you're enjoying this journey with us so far!! Ep. 3 is in the can & we'll be shooting 4 soon enough!
