Gandy Q&A Feb2020

I have three that I'd like to mention. I'm gonna list them in chronological order because that seems significant somehow haha. the first is Dirty Dancing. I first saw this movie when I was around 8 years old and watched it with my aunt. it will always hold a special place in my heart, probably because of who introduced me to it and the memories, but after watching it over and over again many many times over the years (that's not an exaggeration), I have come to appreciate it as the amazing coming of age tale of Ms. Frances Houseman. Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner. etc... it just doesn't get better than that. the second is a movie called "That Night" starring Juliette Lewis, C Thomas Howell and a very young Eliza Dushku (1992). it really spoke to me as a young girl in my tweens because I, like Alice (the protagonist, felt like an outsider and always yearned for a way to fit in and for someone to make a connection with that understood me. if you've never seen it, I highly recommend it. I've always felt it was so underrated. the second is The Breakfast Club. I was introduced to it in my Adolescent Psychology course in college and from the moment I saw it, I fell in love with it. never had any piece of media so clearly explained the angst of adolescence before. everything about it was just so perfect to me. it still remains, to this day, my absolute favorite 80s movie. great video, as always boys! I always enjoy getting a glimpse into your backstories :)

I think the big ones for me were Stand By Me, The Breakfast Club, and Dead Poets Society. I was a teen in the 90s, so while these were all 80s movies they were beloved by my older siblings and had a profound impact on my teen years.

Thanks, guys. Yes, My Bodyguard and The Bodyguard are two totally different movies. John, that was an unexpected surprise on Breaking Away 🙂. Have a great week guys! I liked a lot of the other films mentioned, especially Stand By Me, but I was well past coming of age years when they came out. I suppose Jo Jo Rabbit is the latest.

Aw, thanks so much!! 😊Nice to get a glimpse into yours as well, you've got some good picks! I always find it fun & fascinating to hear the context that really endears people to certain pieces of art. I'm really glad you found these films over time!! Surprised you didn't come across Breakfast Club 'til college, but I'm glad it held up so well as to make that kinda impact. Dirty Dancing is one I've seen, but will DEFINITELY need to revisit as I have very little recollection of the finer nuances. And That Night is a new one to me! Gonna have to look that one up. Both Greg & I had HUGE crushes on Eliza Dushku back in the day lol (probably circa Buffy & Bring it On). Those movies that speak to you and make you feel somehow understood or seen, any art that does that, really, is so special. It is painting with emotion & experience, after all. Appreciate your feedback!! 😊

well, I mean who didn't have a crush on Eliza Dushku? I still kinda do lol 😉but yeah, for sure check out That Night. I'd actually love to see you do a reaction to it haha

thereelrejects

Don't worry, I imagine each of us probably still does as well 😝and movie reactions would be fun haha, but we'd have to find an efficient/enjoyable way of shooting them. One'a these days tho, perhaps! Will add That Night to me list either way :)

You got a trio of classics right there!! Plus that's cool you got to sort of inherit those experiences from your siblings. Hope you were able to get some bonding in over them! Perfect time in life for those films, too.

thereelrejects

Of course, mate! Haha I s'pose I'm gonna have to do a double feature now of both films 😝but in seriousness, it sounds like a sweet movie! Will have to give it a look at some point. Jojo's also a great one! And the kids in the film are fantastic! Always excites me to see a li'l Breaking Away love out there :) I guess they were shooting at IU when my dad was there & as he was there for communications n things like that, he found his way into working on the film & then got the rec to come out here & try out for the DGA trainee program... and the rest is Humphrey History! Hope you're having a good week as well, brother!!

Also lol, shouts-out to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn movie with Elijah Wood lol. Definitely was watching that one back in the day.

David Gandy

The Sandlot was another gem, especially for us baseball fans, (another one well past my coming of age years but enjoyed none the less). And I guess A Christmas Story.

thereelrejects

Aw, The Sandlot!! Definitely wore that tape out growing up. "Squints can't swim!!!" I definitely would've been around that age when I saw it. Haven't seen it in ages! Christmas Story, on the other hand, I wind up seeing at least once each holiday season haha.
