FULL QUESTION IS:


What are your thoughts on big name actors being used to voice characters in animated films as opposed to voice actors?  I just saw something from the Lion King and the moment I heard Beyonce's voice it took me completely out of what I was watching.  This is not the first time that's happened with me during Lion King promo either.  Do you think these films need these actors to sell them or not?

Thanks so much for answering my question, guys! I agree with a lot of your points about using celebrity voices and that there is a time and place where it works, but I really struggle with it. I mean, I struggle with watching animation at all, so when the voice work is from a celebrity that I really recognize, it does pull me right out of what I'm watching. It's hard to invest in the characters and the story when I'm just hearing people like Beyonce speak the lines.

And with the new Lion King, I actually gotta imagine the problem would be twofold given the contrast between the super-realistic animation & the voice acting. Maybe in the future you could try watching them dubbed in another language & read the subtitles? 😅
