FMAB 39 "Daydream"

I interpreted that scene with Al’s “daydream” as he’s running out of time and his physical body can only last so much longer behind the gate, so it’s starting to tug on his soul. Kind of like an alarm to let him know if he doesn’t act quickly his physical body could be lost to him forever. This is basically what Barry alluded to, but I think by showing this you feel Al’s desperation and the urgency of his situation. I know I’ve already said this, but Scar’s character development in this series is my favorite. At this point in the series he actually started to become a “human” to me and not just a mass-murder machine. Lol And the place Al’s body is in, I kind of like to think of it as a purgatory or an in-between. I think technically it’s called the “Portal of Truth”.

Miles really does have a great presence. Everything about that scene where they're getting the plan together is fascinating, but the way Miles directs traffic is something I genuinely admire. He's decisive, makes level headed decisions, and is open to changing course if necessary. He doesn't need to have an action scene for his mark to be left on the series. Nice to see Alphonse step up. The way he talks to the chimeras comes from such a real place that it's hard to not the feel it and get behind him. Also, there goes FMA adding even more characters to the show without hesitation. The way they balance this cast is a feat that shouldn't go understated. Everyone has their own motivations and their own unique identity. Scar's characterization is a shining example of this. The little things they do with his character make me see him in a different light now. The flashback hits hard because he realizes how far he's strayed away from the teachings of his people. We can also add another Winry and Scar moment to the list of great moments between them. Oh and you got the Miles and Scar interaction you were hoping for in the last episode. The difference in their philosophy is radically different and the way Scar reacts when he hears what Miles is working toward says a lot. It's almost as if a little bit of hope was restored in Scar knowing one of his people had such an ambitious goal. The next episode is important for context. Some important questions you had from earlier in the series are about to get answered lol

2021-07-15 05:22:05 That seems like a solid interpretation - some added urgency for the bigger picture and a pretty potent emotional moment for Al. Definitely appreciated the little echo with Barry the Chopper as well. I like the sorta poetic ways in which they draw the mysticism, especially. And DEFINITELY feel ya when it comes to Scar. His arc really snuck up on me, but I appreciate his journey so much now (even just part-way thru). The whole confrontation with Winry and the subsequent little moments of reflection I thought were really potent in this episode. And that's riiiiight haha, the Portal of Truth!! That's sorta how I thought of it as well - like a purgatory that's also sorta intertwined with the fabric of spacetime. Love their attention to little details like with Al's hair and fingernails having grown long & unkempt and things like that. Really helps to subtly emphasize the physicality, even if he is trapped in an otherworldly realm. Thanks for chiming in, dear!! :)

2021-07-15 05:22:05 Right?? Great combination of design, performance, and overall direction. And that's a good way to put that haha, directing traffic. Really love the way they've drawn him both as part of the crew at Briggs and as a leader out in the field. And while I do hope we get to see some sort of action with him - you are right. Even in this episode, just watching him handle things was oddly badass enough haha. Definitely a highlight character for me as of now. And I was sooo happy they had those moments between him and Scar. The differences in their origins and points of view.. definitely felt that little flicker of hope between them - pretty inspiring to hear Miles' motivation. (Don't wanna get greedy or anything, but I'm hoping for at least a couple more Scar/Miles moments moving forward.. 🤞🏼) Really appreciating the subtle developments with Al as well. Even though he's physically unchanged (for the most part) since the show started, I love the subtle ways in which they show you he's maturing and becoming more world-weary through all these experiences - especially as of some of these more recent episodes and the increase in moments when it's just Al on his own. And it seems well-drawn in the bigger picture as well, because as the stakes mount and things push more toward the inhuman, it seems like Al is really taking steps to go against that at each turn - even when the circumstances are muddy. And that's a great point re: their overall handling of the ensemble. Really admire the way they're able to add and subtract characters in such natural-feeling ways. And they know how to use their characters well enough that even when somebody disappears for a good stretch, their presence and impact is still felt. All goes to make the world feel that much more vast, alive, and fleshed out. And yeah, combine that with the complex arcs and motivations, and the history they've bothered to draw for the various regions and you've got something pretty special. Scar's characterization is a great example (really loved his moments in this episode with Winry and the flashbacks in the mine) and weirdly Kimblee's recent development had me pretty impressed.. just because at first he seemed like their one token "evil guy" character, but even HE has a compelling motivation for his fucked up point of view haha (all the more satisfying to watch his plans get foiled here, at least for the moment). And good to know! Will definitely plan to take some notes on the next one haha. Appreciate you watching & taking the time out to chat with me!! 😊
