A hero that cries after every fight? You mean season 1 Deku lol

I felt the disappointment in this episode too considering the other big fights from this season were some of the high points of the entire series. With this being the last big fight of the season you would expect it to be another fight along those lines and it just isn't. I enjoyed the brutality of it and I feel like the fight itself is still extremely important. Deku even attempting to punch All Might is something he would've never done in a previous episode. Being able to take All Might off of that pedestal, even for a moment, is significant for him. Bakugo is a different story though. I did feel like I found out more about him. He's adopted the idea of overcoming the odds and always winning and attached it to his personal identity. A lot of what this show does well is define for specific characters what being a hero means. His idea of being a hero is tied to victory, so his obsession with being a hero would naturally breed an obsession with winning. The problem with that mentality is that Bakugo has a pretty fragile ego, so he lashes out a lot. Seeing Deku close the gap as fast as did isn't making things easier. Admittedly, Bakugo can be frustrating to watch, but other times I appreciate it.

Don't worry guys. Season three will solve the issue this episode couldn't.

The fight itself really didn't deliver the spectacle of the previous big fights in season 2. Todoroki vs Deku and the Stain fight were both highlights and this one definitely didn't reach those levels. Plus it's the season ending fight and compared to what we got in season 1 it's easy to feel a little disappointed. I still enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as I thought I would.

^^I think this is a good way to sum it up. Just after how high some of the highlights of this season have been, this felt a little underwhelming in the grander scheme. Not to say there weren't some good ideas & choices made, but this definitely didn't seem like as bold an episode in the writing department. Thought certain moments in the action approached the territory of some of the earlier fights, but overall not as much. And that's kinda the key (for me, anyway) is that the previous episodes akin to this one had a balance of spectacular action and some strong context/story choices. Thought this episode had some interesting character moments and shed a smidgen of light on Bakugo's drive (to win/be the very best at all costs in all situations, essentially). And I'm also torn because, like.. the way the episode unfolds makes sense, given where those characters are at. Just felt kind of understated/anti-climactic overall given its placement in the series and the significance of that particular matchup. And I getcha when it comes to Bakugo. I definitely appreciated the added context and the brief brushes we have with whoever might be living under the surface. I just still feel like.. pretty much the only things I know about Bakugo is that winning/being the best is his main motivation and he's got a serious temper.. Other than that, I still have no idea why this guy wants to be a hero lol. I mostly just sit here being thankful he saw All Might on TV when he did instead of some all-powerful villain with an appealing public persona lol. I could be wrong, but his choice to be a hero still feels sort of.. arbitrary to me? Like.. this is an acceptable place in society to demonstrate his power and be lauded for it, so that's why he's a hero? Not that I hate Bakugo as a character, I definitely appreciate him some of the time (admittedly most often when the show gets self-aware about his anger tends to be when I enjoy him most). And I can see the potential for some sort of satisfying development coming in the aftermath of all of this, but we'll see. I honestly don't mind the traits that make him who he is, just for as much as so many other characters have developed over time, I kinda wish he would too lol. Either way, still loving the show overall, though. And excited for season 3!!!

Season 3 is incredible, i hope we dont accidentally overhype it though. But yes its great. And as for bakugos motivation for bejng a hero, that gets development along the series as well. The writing is good on the promises it makes to the viewer, sometimes not right away, but eventually youll get there. I loved this episode, because not only did we get bakugo development, but we got a great push from Izuku as well at the final moment of the fight. The leep towards all might being very similar to the one he took on episode 2 of season 1 to save bakugo. Plus i loved seeing the fight get expertly adapted from the manga.

And Bakugo's reason for being a dick was in season 1 a little bit. Basically he was constantly told how amazing he was growing up. He was told that his quirk was flashy and strong, perfect for that of becoming a hero. And that superiority made Izuku look just that much inferior in his eyes because he was without a quirk. Yes he was, and is an asshole in this series, but the reasons for why he is that I feel makes his character interesting. He may be a dick, but he still wants to fight on the side of justice, which is something that I think everybody respects.

2021-07-15 05:22:06 At least as of now, I'm not too concerned about season 3 being over-hyped. Overall I think we've both still been loving the show, so the S3 excitement is real. And I definitely can appreciate some of the things you laid out here - even though we were a bit let down, there are still some great moments. Definitely enjoyed a lot of what was happening with Izuku (both internally and in action) and ultimately things didn't go how we expected them to. It's a fascinating matchup between the 3 of them and there were some pretty badass action beats in there too. With Bakugo I think I've mainly been hoping for some more.. I guess fleshed out development? Or perhaps a view into his philosophy rather than just his attitude. So I'm glad to hear there'll be more of that in the coming seasons. And I appreciate the glimpses under the surface we've gotten up to this point. I feel like I get the circumstances that make Bakugo who he is. I guess what's missing for me still is.. something to make me *feel* a sense for why he wants to fight on the side of justice, because right now it mostly just feels lucky he wound up at UA and not someplace less-geared toward heroism haha. I think Shinso's a decent example of what I'm getting at because at first, you meet him and it's like... "how is this dude not a villain?" ...and then they give you some glimpses into his life & philosophy and it clicks. Right now with Bakugo... I have noooo idea what herosim or justice mean to him (or if they even factor into his mindset lol). That's the stuff I'd like to no more about because I've never been able to shake the "how & why is this dude not a villain?" mindset haha. Believe me, though, some of the MOST rewarding parts of shows are when they take a character I kinda hate and give me a reason to love or identify with them, so I haven't given up or anything. Crazy to think we'll be on to season 3 after the next one!!
