House Heisenberg Q&A

Jamie Smith

I think that Edgar Wright is under appreciated as when I talk about him to people I have to explain what movies he’s done

Jason Dolan

Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick were probably the most under appreciated in their time, having been nominated for 5 and 4 Oscars for Best Director, but never winning. That's absolutely ludicrous to me. Nolan has been pretty under appreciated with only one nomination so far for Dunkirk. But at the end of the day, the fans still appreciate these 3 directors, even if their peers failed to recognize them. Maybe the most under appreciated director from a historical perspective might be John McTiernan. Die Hard, Predator and The Hunt for Red October are all time classics. He definitely has some big times misses, but overall, this guy created three masterpieces so I'd like to hear his name bandied about a little bit more when it comes to the all time greats. That said, his legal woes have not helped his legacy.

Ahh, good call! I think in our circle, it's easy to forget that not everybody knows his name/filmography intimately.

Isn't that crazy? Seems like a lot of the best or most prolific directors struggle to get academy recognition, at least in their time. Funny to see what lasts and whose names get remembered. Good call on McTiernan too! Although that's definitely a name that comes with something of an asterisk.. Looks like he's got something new in the works, though, so we'll see!

Oh! Wait, I got it! I got it! Think about these movies: The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, This is Spinal Tap, Misery, The Sure Thing, The American President, When Harry Met Sally... these movies are ALL TIME CLASSICS from the 80s and 90s. Do you even know who directed them? All the same guy. And what diversity! He never was nominated for a Best Director Oscar. Yes, Meathead gets my vote. Rob Reiner is easily the most under appreciated director of all time.

Oh shit! Reading the list of titles, it slowly started to click in my mind and then once I hit Spinal Tap, it hit me. Reiner is a TERRIFIC choice! That might have to be another filmmaker whose filmography I go back and revisit. Didn't realize just how many greats he's made!

Ron Harrison

The only under appreciated ones I can think of are Jos Whedon and Josh Trank. I grew up watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer. When Marvel Studios hired him to direct the Avengers, He did an incredible job and the movie made lots of money. He followed it up with Avengers Age of Ultron, which introduced Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch to movie audiences. People said the movie wasn't as good as Avengers and stories starting coming out about how he had a difficult time on set managing everything with a broken leg and how he was dealing with studio interference from Marvel Studios. Jos said he didn't want to do anymore Marvel Studios films. But I like Jos, met him in Albuquerque when he was filming the first Avengers film. Super nice guy and great with his fans. Anyway saw Much Ado About Nothing which didn't make a whole lot of money and now people are disappointed with him because he's not directing Batgirl.

Ron Harrison

I loved watching Josh Trank's Chronicle film. It was terrific. The Fantastic Four film he directed was a mess, but studio interference was against him in a big way. I know Josh Thank acted out trashing a hotel room and saying negative things about the studio that hired him. But it's clear he's a talented director.

Definitely a compelling choice there. Seems like, as you pointed out, at least recently he's seen something of a decline in the court of public opinion (and some of his recent personal-life stuff probably hasn't helped any), but I quite enjoyed Much Ado & I think we both appreciated some of the flourishes he brought to Justice League. Really cool you got to meet him during the first Avengers shoot & glad to hear he was so gracious! And as for Batgirl... honestly I don't think either of us was too upset by that. Happy to see him head out for something different, perhaps (hopefully) something original.

Trank definitely seems like he's got some solid chops. And even with the debacle that was Fantastic Four, still thought he brought some good stuff to that movie, especially in the first half. Hoping that his next film will give him a better chance to showcase his own vision again. And then from there, I think it's just a matter of establishing a consistent track record.

Ron Harrison

I like the idea of a Batgirl movie, but I want DC films to do a better job with continuity. I'd like to see a Dick Grayson/Robin movie as well as a Batgirl movie. I want DC films to embrace all the characters in the Batman family no matter how bizarre or weird they are.

Now that’s something we’d definitely be on board for! The BatFamily is enough to be its own side universe (which would be pretty awesome to see on the big screen). Greg’s got a whole series of films worked out based on those characters haha. Hoping that after Flashpoint WB can get its act together and give the DCEU some level of consistency. And it’d definitely be cool to see them embrace their weirder, more out there characters, ‘cause that’s the stuff that expands the genre and keeps it fresh.

I’m not sure I’d ever want to make a MEGA-budget comic book movie just because that seems... so stressful. Lol But it’s always been a dream of mine to adapt Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. Such a strange, twisted book that’d make for a really cool film, I feel like. Always hoping that someday they’ll start making lower-budget adaptations of their more out-there and one-off comics & graphic novels, because how cool would that be??
